일을 하거나, 명상을 하거나 할 때에는
차분한 음악이나, 앰비언트, 인스트루멘탈 곡들을 많이 듣는 편이지만, 분위기를 전환하거나, 신나는 에너지를 증폭시키고 싶을 때에는 Weezer나, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, 그리고 최근의 콜드플레이 처럼, 록을 기반으로 팝 적인 요소가 가미된 장르의 음악들을 찾아 듣습니다.

그럴때 Beck의 음악이 빠지면 섭하죠!
EDM보다 록 음악을 선호하는데,
신나는 느낌을 한껏 즐기고 싶을때 듣는 곡,

경쾌한 피아노 인트로에 이미 기분이 좋아집니다.
그리고 처음부터 하이톤으로 유지하는
Beck 특유의 개성있는 보컬이 그루비한 드럼과 함께 등장합니다.
노래는 시종일관 마이너코드를 스치듯 멜로디를 그리는데,
반면에 노래는 신이 납니다.
가사는 울적한데, 비트는 경쾌하고,
노래는 그런 울적함을 경쾌함으로 풀어내려는 느낌이 듭니다.

35초부터 시작되며, 곡에서 총 3번 반복되는 후렴구는
이 곡의 진정한 킬링 파트가 아닐까 싶습니다.
고개를 끄덕끄덕하면서 듣다가 후렴구가 클라이맥스를 터트리면
'와.. 곡 진짜 잘 썼네..' 하면서 들을 때마다 감탄을 하는 곡입니다.
(개인적인 감상평이라 역시 주관이 많이 담기네요. ^^;)

Beck Hansen (born Bek David Campbell; July 8, 1970), known mononymously as Beck, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. He rose to fame in the early 1990s with his experimental and lo-fi style, and became known for creating musical collages of wide genre styles. Today, he musically encompasses folk, funk, soul, hip hop, electronic, alternative rock, country, and psychedelia. He has released 13 studio albums (3 of which were independently released), as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.

Born in Los Angeles in 1970, Beck grew towards hip-hop and folk in his teens and began to perform locally at coffeehouses and clubs. He moved to New York City in 1989 and became involved in the city's small and fiery anti-folk movement. Returning to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, he cut his breakthrough single "Loser," which became a worldwide hit in 1994, and released his first major album, Mellow Gold, the same year. Odelay, released in 1996, topped critic polls and won several awards. He released the country-influenced, twangy Mutations in 1998, and the funk-infused Midnite Vultures in 1999. The soft-acoustic Sea Change in 2002 showcased a more serious Beck, and 2005's Guero returned to Odelay's sample-based production. The Information in 2006 was inspired by electro-funk, hip hop, and psychedelia; 2008's Modern Guilt was inspired by '60s pop music; and 2014's folk-infused Morning Phase won Album of the Year at the 57th Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015. His thirteenth studio album, Colors, was released in October 2017 after a long production process, and won awards for Best Alternative Album and Best Engineered Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. His fourteenth album titled Hyperspace is due in 2019.[2]

With a pop art collage of musical styles, oblique and ironic lyrics, and postmodern arrangements incorporating samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and sound effects, Beck has been hailed by critics and the public throughout his musical career as being among the most idiosyncratically creative musicians of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock. Two of Beck's most popular and acclaimed recordings are Odelay and Sea Change, both of which were ranked on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The four-time platinum artist has collaborated with several artists and has made several contributions to soundtracks.

얼터너티브와 인디 음악을 좋아한다면,
한 번 쯤은 들어봤을만한 아티스트이자 뮤지션, Beck.
90년대부터 2010년대가 끝나가는 현재까지
20년이 넘는 세월동안 활발한 음악 활동을 하고 있습니다.

록을 베이스로, 힙합, 소울, 팝 등 다양한 장르를 넘나드는 음악적 시도를 하는데, 활동 초기의 앨범부터 최근에 발매한 Colors까지 듣다보면,
세월을 초월하면서, 유행을 타지 않으면서도,
언제 꺼내 들어도 Beck 특유의 '세련된' 터치가 느껴진다는 느낌이 듭니다.
(글로 설명하기가 상당히 어려운 느낌이네요 ^^;)

예를들어,
음악 활동 초반에 발매했던 곡 'Loser'는,
록이라는 장르에 힙합을 입힌..
Beck의 반골기질이 다분한 느낌의,
그때 당시로는 파격적인 스타일의 곡이고,
세계적으로도 나름 큰 인기를 끌었던 곡이었습니다.

그리고 최근에 발매한 앨범인 Colors에는
어느 곡이나 그루비한 드럼을 기반으로 한 록 베이스에
팝적인 요소를 가득 넣어서
여느 게임의 OST나, 광고등의 CM으로 쓰이기에도 부족함이 전혀 없는,
음악성과 대중성을 동시에 잡은 곡들이 많습니다. (명반이죠!)

참고로 오늘 추천곡이 수록된 Colors 앨범은
2019년 2월에 있었던 61회 그래미 어워즈에서
Arctic Monkeys, St. Vincent, Bjork 등 쟁쟁한 경쟁자들을 제치고,
'Best Alternative Music Album' 상을 수상하는 쾌거를 거두었습니다. ^^
