A beauty without adornment

Although I know that beauty is subjective and that beauty sometimes depends on the eye of the beholder, I admit that I am an admirer of beautiful things. I am one of those people who stop to contemplate, admire, and applaud all the beauty that surrounds me. I believe that beauty lies in the grand and spectacular, but also in the simplest and most unexpected things, which, precisely, don't need artifice to dazzle us, just as nature does. The sunset is beautiful with its orange and blue hues; the beauty of the fierce and tranquil seas is astonishing; landscapes impress with their color and immensity. Each of these things requires no makeup, editing, or Photoshop: they possess a real, unfiltered beauty.

Just like those things in nature, so are we. We must let our essence be what impresses, what attracts, what dazzles, what speaks. When we "touch up" our appearance, we are taking away that naturalness that makes us unique and different. In a society so demanding and focused on the beauty of people, especially women, we can be tempted to change our appearance to please and be accepted by others. Hence, we not only use clothes and makeup, but we also undergo expensive surgeries to change our appearance. This has resulted in almost identical women, with beauties created in laboratories or operating rooms, as if they all came from the same mold.

I'm a 52-year-old woman, simple, who usually wears a dress and sandals, with my hair loose and flowing, and I wear very little makeup: for me, a touch of lipstick is enough. Because of the hot climate in the city where I live, it's stressful (or at least that's how I see it) to wear layers of clothing and makeup because you can easily turn into a melted ice cream cone. Sometimes I feel truly sorry for women touching up their makeup every half hour, or for 15-year-old girls putting on makeup as if they were 30 just to look perfect, beautiful, like dolls. And they do look like dolls, but that's because something about the beauty they display makes them artificial.

I'm not ugly, or at least I don't think so, but there are days when I can look more haggard, with dark circles under my eyes, and if someone sees me, they know perfectly well that I'm not at my best because I'm not going to hide behind a mask of makeup or creams. But there are also days when my laughter is my best accessory, my wavy hair my best veil, and my tan my best makeup. And people recognize and applaud that: naturalness, simplicity, even unadulterated femininity. So, yes, I do believe we can be beautiful without a lot of embellishments or artifice. Soy una mujer sencilla de 52 años que suele usar vestido y sandalias, con el pelo suelto y ondulado, y me maquillo muy poco: para mí, un toque de labial es suficiente. Debido al calor de la ciudad donde vivo, es estresante (o al menos así lo veo yo) llevar capas de ropa y maquillaje porque una se puede parecer a un helado derretido. A veces me da mucha pena ver a mujeres retocándose el maquillaje cada media hora, o a chicas de 15 años maquillándose como si tuvieran 30 solo para verse perfectas, guapas, como muñecas. Y sí que parecen muñecas, pero es porque la belleza que muestran las hace ver artificiales.

No soy fea, o al menos no lo creo, pero hay días en que puedo verme más demacrada, con ojeras, y si alguien me ve, sabe perfectamente que no estoy en mi mejor momento porque no voy a esconderme tras una máscara de maquillaje o cremas. Pero también hay días en que mi risa es mi mejor accesorio, mi cabello ondulado mi mejor velo y mi bronceado mi mejor maquillaje. Y la gente lo reconoce y lo aplaude: naturalidad, sencillez, incluso feminidad pura. Así que sí, creo que podemos ser bellas sin muchos adornos ni artificios.
