Velarifictorus micado, also known as the Japanese burrowing cricket, is an insect species native to East Asia, particularly Japan, China, and Korea. It has spread to parts of North America, where it was first detected in the 1950s and has since established populations, especially in the eastern United States.

This cricket is notable for its burrowing behavior and its loud, distinctive chirping sounds, produced by males as part of their mating call. They can be identified by their generally dark coloration and medium-sized bodies, which are often around 15-20 millimeters in length.

Unlike some cricket species, Velarifictorus micado can adapt to various habitats, including urban areas. Its spread in the U.S. has raised some ecological concerns, as it competes with native cricket species for resources and could impact local ecosystems.
