Wild sugarcane, often referred to as Saccharum spontaneum, is a species of grass found in various parts of Asia and Africa. It's a relative of the cultivated sugarcane used in sugar production but differs in several key ways. Wild sugarcane is typically more invasive and resilient, often growing in dense clumps that can take over other vegetation in fields or along waterways. This characteristic makes it a common plant in wetlands, riverbanks, and other areas with high moisture.

While wild sugarcane is not usually cultivated for commercial sugar production due to its lower sugar content compared to cultivated varieties, it plays an important ecological role. It stabilizes soil, reduces erosion, and provides habitat for wildlife. In some regions, farmers and researchers also use it in hybridization efforts to breed disease-resistant or hardier sugarcane varieties.
