The Anonymous Mark

Walking around Serbia you can feel the pulse of the city in the constant flow of the street art and graffiti that embellish every wall and street. From the old historical buildings to the new constructions the whole city is like an open canvas that welcomes any artists’ mark. As you walk down the street you can’t help but get amazed by the constant stream of colors and shapes announcing to you that someone has passed by and left their mark. But what catches your eye most of all are the locations from which the artists have worked.

On this long green bridge that stretches before you, even here, on this seemingly inaccessible height, you can see signs of graffiti. Marks, signs and entire images made with utmost effort have been placed on this bridge made of metal. What makes you think about this art is the very location from which the artist worked, being hundreds of meters above the water level. To create art, he had to expose himself to mortal risk. He climbed up on the fragile railing of the bridge to invest his piece of the sky in the work. This is real art, made with passion, just to be noticed, even if only by a few.

The presence of graffiti in Serbia gives you an insight into the modern soul of the country. It tells you about the events that have happened in the past and about the changes that have taken place. It shows you where the locals have drawn their lines, where they have crossed out, where they have left their mark, and where, just for the sake of art, they have climbed up on an inaccessible height. It opens to you a part of the country’s history as well as its culture and society. It makes you understand that the desire of the people to express themselves through art is what makes them human.

When we speak about art, this kind of art challenges a person to stop and look around. It makes you look not only at the paintings but also at all the objects around you. In an age when everything disappears after a few months, being immortalized in art, on canvas, is a real feeling of eternity. It makes you value the beauty of the everyday world around us. It challenges you to try to become a part of it yourself, to immortalize yourself in the best and most beautiful way possible: high above the ground, on the fragile railing of a bridge.
