The Giant of Spring
Nowruz brings the rebirth of spring, and though celebrated throughout many regions of the world, it is in Iran that the entire country pauses for vacations and participates in the celebration of the New Year.
about 10 years ago one day on this holiday, wandering around deserted streets searching for something to take photo, I pulled out my camera to capture pictures of this or that historical building in Tehran, when I chanced upon these wonderful giant puppets.
It was a brilliant idea of Tehran municipality to create unusual festive attractions for the city’s inhabitants and amaze visitors. Such high-quality and beautiful art installations on the street are a real delight! This fun and spectacular performance is sure to brighten the hearts of thousands of people who have enthusiastically embraced this idea.
Like any folk holiday, Nowruz is associated with ancient festivals. Similar to Santa Claus, there is a beloved houseguest in Iranian folklore named Amu Nowruz (“Uncle Nowruz”). He is an old man with a white beard, wearing a felt cap and a long coat, who appears in people’s dreams every year as the harbinger of spring. The story told about Amu Nowruz is a tale of eternal love. It is said that he wanders the earth every year searching for his beloved Naneh Sarma (“Grandmother Frost”) in order to meet her in the shortest period of the year. When winter comes, she disappears again, and he returns to his journey alone. Amu Nowruz symbolizes the end of the long and cold winter, while Naneh Sarma represents the endless frosty nights.
