TOO LATE
I saw the message almost immediately after it was sent.
It was from my boss.
He needed one person to step in and handle a presentation later that day. Something urgent. Something important.
I read it once… then again.
Before I could think too much about it, replies started coming in.
“I’m not available.”
“Busy at the moment.”
“Not in the office.”
I stared at my screen.
I wasn’t busy.
I was right there.
My eyes went back to the message.
I knew I could do it. Maybe not perfectly, but well enough. I had worked on parts of the project before. I understood it.
Still, something held me back.
What if I messed up?
What if I couldn’t answer a question?
What if it didn’t go well?
I looked at the chat again.
No one had volunteered yet.
For a second, I thought about typing.
Just a simple message.
“I can handle it.”
My fingers moved slightly… then stopped.
I told myself to wait a bit. Maybe someone more experienced would step in. Someone better suited.
Another minute passed.
Then another.
Then the message came.
“Alright, I’ll assign it.”
My chest tightened a little.
A name was mentioned.
Not mine.
I leaned back in my chair, staring at the screen.
The chat moved on like nothing happened.
But I didn’t.
A few hours later, I walked past the conference room.
The presentation was already going on.
I slowed down… just a little.
Then I heard something that made me stop completely. 🔥
