Not Me
I didn’t expect my name to come up.
The discussion had been going on for a while. Different opinions. Different suggestions.
Then someone mentioned me.
“At least he handled something similar before.”
All eyes turned.
I wasn’t ready.
Not because I didn’t know anything… but because I hadn’t actually done what they thought I had.
It was close.
Similar.
But not the same.
For a second, I considered letting it pass.
No one was questioning it.
No one was asking for details.
It would have been easy to nod.
To accept it.
To step into something I wasn’t fully prepared for.
I could already see how it would play out.
The expectations.
The pressure.
The moment where I’d have to prove something I never claimed in the first place.
I cleared my throat.
“That wasn’t exactly me,” I said.
The room shifted.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Someone corrected it.
Another person adjusted the conversation.
And just like that… it moved on.
Later, I sat there thinking about how close that moment was.
Not to success.
But to carrying something that was never mine to begin with.
