Hello friends of Feel Good, I hope you are all well. Yesterday, we experienced the impact of two earthquakes here in Venezuela: one of magnitude 7.2 and another, 39 seconds later, of magnitude 7.5. This occurred around 6:20 pm, and although it caused significant damage in downtown Caracas, the greatest tragedy was felt in the coastal state of La Guaira, where several buildings collapsed and where most of the victims and missing persons are likely located. The afternoon passed quickly as we received reports of damage in other states of the country and of the epicenter of the two earthquakes, which was in the state of Yaracuy in the central-western part of the country. Night fell with preliminary reports and the most devastating news: more than 10 collapsed structures in La Guaira State. That's why I wanted to take advantage of this Night Photography competition, round #3, to document the state of Caracas as night went down.

The first thing I noticed was that immediately after the two earthquakes, a dense cloud of dust rose, making it quite clear that this earthquake had structurally damaged many of the city's older buildings. Many people went downstairs and stayed in the streets, near their homes, to avoid being trapped inside by aftershocks. For my part, we decided not to leave the apartment since we live on the 20th floor and the elevators were out of service. Going down so soon and being caught in an aftershock while descending the stairs was a risk we didn't want to take. So I stayed in my room checking for structural damage like cracks in the walls or door frames. Since the earthquake struck at nightfall, I tried to photograph the building to look for any visible damage, but I didn't find any. Ultimately, based on reports from neighbors and the fact that all our utilities were working (electricity, water, and internet), the damage to our building was minor, and it successfully withstood the earthquake.

It was already midnight, and as you can see, all the lights in the neighborhood were on. People didn't want to return to their homes for fear of aftershocks. I felt at least three significant aftershocks: one at 7:00 PM, another at 1:30 AM, and the last one at 3:15 AM, but it was less intense. Around 4:00 AM, I took one last photo of the city looking north. People had already gone home, and I couldn't stay awake any longer, so I decided to go to bed. When I woke up this morning, no further aftershocks were reported, but news was already coming in from the interior of the country, especially from La Guaira, and that's when we realized the true extent of the damage. For now, I can only thank providence that my family, friends, and close colleagues are safe. Now we need to organize ourselves to overcome this complex challenge that lies ahead.

Hola amigos de Feel Good, espero que se encuentren bien, el día de ayer tuvimos aquí en Venezuela el impacto de 2 sismos: uno de 7.2 y otro, 39 segundos después de 7.5. Esto sucedió cerca de las 6:20 pm y aunque causó daños importantes en el centro de Caracas, la mayor parte de la tragedia se lo llevó el estado costero de La Guaira donde varios edificios colapsaron y muy probablemente se encuentren la mayoría de las victimas y desaparecidos. La tarde pasó rápidamente, mientras recibíamos los reportes de los daños en oteros estados del país y del epicentro del los 2 sismos que fueron en el Estqado Yaracuy en la zona centro occidental del país. La noche llego con los reportes preliminares y la noticia más dura que fue el reporte de más de 10 estructuras colapsadas en el Estado La Guaira, por eso quise aprovechar este espacio de Night Photography, round #3 para reportar el estado de la Ciudad de Caracas cuando cayo la noche.

Lo primero fue que inmediatamente después de los 2 sismos se levantó una densa nube de polvo, lo que me dejo bastante claro que este terremoto afectó estructuralmente muchos de los edificios más antiguos de la ciudad. Muchos bajaron y se mantuvieron en las calles, cerca de sus casas para evitar que las replicas terminaran de colapsar los edificios y terminar atrapados adentro, por mi parte, decidimos no salir del apartamento ya que vivimos en un piso 20 y los ascensores permanecieron desactivados, bajar tan pronto y que una réplica nos atrapara mientras bajábamos las escaleras era un riesgo que no queríamos correr. Así que me mantuve en mi cuarto viendo si habían daños estructurales como grietas en las paredes o en los marcos de las puertas. Como el terremoto nos tomó al filo de la noche, intenté fotografiar la torre para buscar algún daño visible pero no encontré ninguno, y en definitiva con los reportes de los vecinos y el hecho de que teníamos todos los servicios intactos (luz, agua e internet), los daños en nuestro edificio fueron menores y pudo soportar exitosamente el embate de este terremoto.

Ya eran las 12 de la media noche y como pueden ver todas las luces de la urbanización estaban encendidas, la gente no quería regresar a sus hogares por temor a las réplicas después del sismo principal, yo sentí al menos 3 importantes réplicas uno a las 7 pm, otro a la 1:30 am y el último a las 3:15 am pero de menor intensidad. Llegada ya las 4 de la mañana tomé una última foto de la ciudad viendo hacia el norte, ya las personas se habían recogido e ido a sus casas y yo ya no aguantaba más el sueño y decidí irme a la cama. Cuando me levanté esta mañana no se reportaron más replicas posteriores, pero ya las noticias del interior del país estaban llegando y sobre todo de la Guaira, y allí nos dimos cuenta de la verdadera magnitud del daño. Por ahora solo me queda agradecerle a la providencia que mi familia, amigos y colegas cercanos están bien, ahora nos toca organizarnos para superar este complejo desafío que ahora se nos presenta.
