Every country has its own culture and traditions, its own folklore, which encompasses many things, but within that lies the music that is unique to or characteristic of that country.

Cada país tiene su cultura y tradiciones propias, su propio folclore, que incluye muchas cosas, pero dentro de ello música propia o que caracteriza a ese país.

Más allá de que nos guste o no la música autóctona del país que hemos nacido ella algo que identifica a nuestro lugar, al lugar donde hemos nacido. Aquí en Hive hay gente de todas partes del mundo y me parece una buena idea el hecho de compartir esa música que se escucha en nuestro lugar de origen. Podemos amar ese tipo de música o no, sólo saber estar allí, pero la idea es compartir aquí en la comunidad cual esa música.

De esa manera para este mes de julio, la idea que planteo es traer videos musicales que se refieran a la música autóctona de sus respectivos países, música que pertenece al folclore, a la cultura de cada país respectivamente.

Y a modo de ejemplo les traigo en esta oportunidad la música de mi país Argentina y algunas anécdotas al respecto. Recuerden que siempre la experiencia personal, esas anécdotas que tienen que ver con el tema del mes es lo más valioso de todo.

Argentina se caracteriza por dos tipos de músicas que pertenecen a la tradición como el tango y el folclore de determinadas regiones de la misma, como las típicas chacareras y zambas argentinas.

Whether or not we like the traditional music of the country where we were born, it is something that defines our home, the place where we were born. Here at Hive, there are people from all over the world, and I think it’s a good idea to share the music we listen to in our home countries. We may or may not love that sort of music; we might just be familiar with it, but the idea is to share that music here within the community.

So, for this July, my suggestion is to share music videos featuring the traditional music of your respective countries, music that is part of the folklore and culture of each country.

As an example, I’d like to share some music from my country, Argentina, along with a few anecdotes about it. Remember that personal experience, those anecdotes relating to the theme of the month, is always the most valuable thing of all.

Argentina is characterised by two types of traditional music: the tango and the folk music of certain regions, such as the typical Argentine chacareras and zambas.

Pero hablemos primero del tango y de una anécdota personal. No soy fan del tango, pero ahora que estoy lejos de Argentina, cuando lo escucho siento nostalgia. Es como algo que siempre está, pero cuando uno se aparta siente la lejanía.

Los tres ejemplos que les traigo es por una razón especial, ellos son tango de Juan Darienzo y el inigualable Carlos Gardel. Cada vez que escucho un tango me remonto a muchos años atrás, demasiados, cuando volvió a la historia de mi familia un hombre que sabía mucho de plantas, siempre hablo de Ivo. Debo aclarar que uno de los ejemplos es con baile incluido y que se considera al tango como uno de los bailes más sensuales del mundo.

Pero además de haber sido capataz del rosedal de la ciudad y saber infinidad de conocimiento tanto de plantas medicinales como de árboles y de cualquier otra planta, él era fan absoluto del tango, sobre todo de orquestas. Tocaba el bandoneón y recuerdo cuando un día lo trajo a mi casa para tocarnos tango con él. Tenía un bandoneón alemán, lo recuerdo y ese día mi familia y yo nos quedamos todos absortos escuchándolo tocar, que maravilla. No se dan una idea como sonaba ese bandoneón.

But let’s talk first about tango and a personal anecdote. I’m not a fan of tango, but now that I’m far from Argentina, when I hear it I feel nostalgic. It’s like something that’s always there, but when you’re away from it, you feel the distance.

The three examples I’m sharing with you are for a special reason: they are tangos by Juan Darienzo and the incomparable Carlos Gardel. Every time I hear a tango, I’m transported back many years, far too many, to when a man who knew a great deal about plants re-entered my family’s history; I’m always talking about Ivo. I should point out that one of the examples includes dancing, and that the tango is considered one of the most sensual dances in the world.

But as well as having been the foreman of the city’s rose garden and possessing a wealth of knowledge about medicinal plants, trees and all manner of other plants, he was an absolute fan of tango, particularly of orchestras. He played the bandoneon, and I remember one day when he brought it to my house to play tango for us. He had a German bandoneon, I remember it well, and that day my family and I were all spellbound listening to him play; it was marvellous. You’ve no idea how that bandoneon sounded.

Les aseguro que era un genio, había tocado en orquestas y el día de su cumpleaños número 80, tocó para todos los invitados. No me canso de recordarlo, incluso cierro los ojos y me parece escucharlo, era como un abuelo. La anécdota que tengo especial es que el tenía mucha música de tango, milongas y hasta folclore en cassettes, estaban viejos y arruinados, pero cada uno tenía anotado en un cartón y me pedía que buscara la misma canción en internet, que quería volver a escucharlas.

Pasé mucho tiempo dedicada a ello y él era feliz. Nunca estuve más cerca del tango, gracias a él lo conocí un poco más y a muchos artistas. Hoy cuando escucho un tango… pienso… mi abuelo postizo Ivo.

I can assure you he was a genius; he’d played in orchestras and, on his 80th birthday, he played for all the guests. I never tire of thinking back on it; I even close my eyes and it’s as if I can still hear him, he was like a grandfather to me. One particular memory I have is that he had loads of tango, milonga and even folk music on cassettes. They were old and worn out, but he’d written the titles down on bits of card and would ask me to look up the same songs online, as he wanted to listen to them again.

I spent a lot of time doing just that, and it made him happy. I’ve never felt closer to tango; thanks to him, I got to know it a bit better and discovered many artists. Today, when I hear a tango… I think… my surrogate grandfather, Ivo.

Y aunque se poco de este segundo tema del folclore de Argentina, quiero hablarles de mi anécdota con las chacareras y zambas. Les traigo unos ejemplos al respecto, pero como siempre digo las experiencias personales son lo más valioso de estas reseñas.

Cuando era niña y adolescente fui a un colegio donde sólo había mujeres, un colegio católico, pero una de las materias o asignaturas del primer año de secundaria era folclore y consistía en estudiar esas tradiciones sobre todo relacionadas con la música como las chacareras, zambas y otras.

El profesor que de apellido era Gestoso, dirigía incluso grupos de folclore que bailaban en teatros, organizaba espectáculos de ese tema en fechas especiales tradicionales, como el día de la bandera, el himno argentino y otras fechas patrias.

And although I know little about this second aspect of Argentine folklore, I’d like to tell you about my own experience with chacareras and zambas. I’ll give you a few examples, but as I always say, personal experiences are the most valuable part of these reviews.

When I was a child and a teenager, I went to an all-girls’ school, a Catholic school, and one of the subjects in the first year of secondary school was folklore, which involved studying these traditions, particularly those related to music, such as chacareras, zambas and others.

The teacher, whose surname was Gestoso, even led folklore groups that performed in theatres and organised shows on this theme on special traditional occasions, such as Flag Day, the Argentine national anthem and other national holidays.

Pero esa asignatura no consistía solamente en estudiar sino en bailar. Como muchos saben yo no bailo nada, la música me fascina, pero para bailar nací de madera y una madera muy dura, pero debía hacerlo, entonces debí aprender a bailar folclore. Por supuesto hoy no me acuerdo casi nada, pero en ese momento lo hice muy bien.

Y como éramos todas mujeres, las más altas en estatura hacían el papel de hombre y adivinen que paso… yo era de las más altas por lo que tuve ese papel. Debo decir que era muy aplicada siempre en todas las asignaturas y ésta no fue la excepción. Lo único que agradezco es que no tuve que bailar frente a público, sino que solamente era algo entre compañeras del curso.

But that subject wasn’t just about studying, it was about dancing. As many of you know, I can’t dance at all; I love music, but when it comes to dancing, I’m as stiff as a board, a very stiff one at that. But I had to do it, so I had to learn to dance folk dances. Of course, I can hardly remember any of it now, but at the time I did very well.

And as we were all women, the tallest ones played the male roles, and guess what happened… I was one of the tallest, so I ended up with that part. I must say I always applied myself thoroughly in every subject, and this was no exception. The only thing I’m grateful for is that I didn’t have to dance in front of an audience; it was just something we did amongst our classmates.
