My Biggest Mistake in This 49 Mana Battle — Understanding Collateral Damage the Hard Way

In todays 49 Mana Battle I made one big mistake. I misunderstood the rule set.

Actually in Collateral Damage everything works the opposite of what I thought. I selected my monsters thinking that after every successful attack the adjacent enemy units would also keep taking damage.

But in Collateral Damage it works differently. The damage dealt to the enemy also affects your own adjacent allied units. That was my biggest mistake and because of it I lost this battle.

However the battle was very interesting. It lasted for 22 rounds and every round had a different twist.

First lets understand the rule sets in this 49 Mana Battle and see which two rule sets appeared because understanding them is important before playing any battle.

Remember if you want to increase your win streak you must understand the rule sets properly and select your monsters according to them.

OUTSIDER

The first rule set was Outsider which is very simple and easy to understand. In this rule set you can summon only one Wild Unit. You cannot summon any additional Wild Units. This is a type of restriction.

So the best strategy in this rule set is to choose your strongest Wild Unit so you can get the maximum benefit from it.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE

The second rule set was Collateral Damage. In this rule set every unit gains the Reckless ability.

What does Reckless do? After every successful attack one of your team's adjacent allied units also takes 1 damage.

For example when one of my monsters successfully attacks an enemy and deals damage as soon as the attack lands successfully one of my own adjacent allied monsters also receives 1 damage.

Because of this it is important not to select too many heavy strikers or very fast monsters that attack repeatedly.

The reason is simple. Every successful attack also damages your own team so the more attacks you make the more damage your own monsters receive. This can increase your losses.

Keeping these two rule sets in mind there are a few important things to remember.

1. First avoid selecting too many heavy damage strikers.

2. Second avoid choosing very fast monsters that keep attacking again and again.

3. Third try to use monsters with strong armor and high health so the self-damage has less impact.

WHERE WAS MY MISTAKE?

The biggest mistake I made in this 49 Mana Battle was choosing a Magic Archon.

Because of that all my Magic attackers received +1 Magic damage which became an even bigger danger for my own adjacent allied units.

Instead I should have selected an Archon that gives the -1 Health ability. That would have reduced the health of all enemy monsters by one.

And that is exactly what my opponent did.

Now let's look at my monster lineup.

I selected a strong frontline tank with Double Strike capable of attacking with both Melee and Magic attacks.

In the middle position I used a mix of Magic Ranged and Melee attackers.

In the backline I again used a combination of Magic and Ranged attackers.

Instead I should have selected three non-attacking support monsters out of my seven monsters whose job would only be protection and healing.

Because of my poor monster selection I suffered a heavy defeat in this battle. It was sad but the good thing is that I learned a lot from this rule set.

My favorite monster in today's battle was the high health frontline tank because it survived for a long time and kept fighting against the enemy team.
