DIY || Crochet Diamond Bucket Hat.

I've seen various designs of crochet bucket hats over the years, but today, I wanted to try out something different. Something I haven't seen before. So, I took out my sketch book, made a sketch and let's just say I'm glad the bucket hat didn't turn out like the sketch because the sketch was unsalvageably funny.

The idea to try out this bucket hat in said pattern came to me today, while I was taking stock of the yarns I have available. Luckily, I had just the right materials for the bucket hat plus, I decided to incorporate the velvet yarn I had ordered a while back. So, come with me as I take you through the process of making the crochet diamond bucket hat.

Materials Needed.

🤍: 3.5mm crochet hook
🤍: Measuring tape
🤍: Darning needle
🤍: A cutter
🤍: A sketch book (optional)

The Process of Creation

For the creation of this masterpiece, I made use of two types of yarn, acrylic yarns and velvet yarn.

To begin, I made a magic circle and into the circle, I made twelve double crochet stitches. To end the first row, I made a slip stitch. This is how I would end every other consecutive row.

From rows two to row five, I made increases. The increases done in row two brought the stitch count to twenty-four and from rows three to five, I alternated the increases. This brought the stitch count to seventy-two at the end of row five.

Once I got to the sixth row, I stopped making increases. The seventh row was a replica of the sixth row.

On the seventh row, I started the colour change which was to bring about the diamond pattern. The diamond pattern followed odd numbers. For row seven, a single colour change, for row eight, three colour changes, for row nine, five colour changes. Rows ten and eleven were mirror images of rows eight and seven.

At the end of row eleven, the diamonds were fully formed. From there on, I continued making half double crochet stitches into every stitch till they got to the desired length. Then, it was time to begin making the ruffles.

There were three ruffled rows in total. For the first row of ruffles, I inserted three double crochet stitches into every space. This brought the stitch count to about two hundred and sixteen.

For the second row of ruffles, I made three double crochet stitches into every space from the previous row. This brought the stitch count to about six hundred and forty-eight stitches. In this row I decided to alternate both colours of the acrylic yarn partly because I wanted to see how it would turn out and partly because I didn't want to run out of yarn. A game of yarn chicken and I actually won.

For the final row of ruffles, I changed from acrylic to velvet yarn and then made half double crochet stitches round with no increases. The stitch count stayed the same as the previous row.

The last thing I did was weave in the loose ends, which weren't as many as I had imagined. This brought me to the end of the project.

I really liked how this turned out on completion and to think the idea just came to me this morning. I was initially skeptical about the colour combination but I feel the colours compliment each other. It took me about four hours from the start to the completion of this ruffle hat and like I always say, the ruffles take half the time to make.
