This is my post on #freewriters3188 #dailyprompt after midnight hosted by @marinnewest's.
🌙 After Midnight with Grandma and Grandpa
The old clock in the hallway had just struck twelve when Grandma stirred from her rocking chair. The house was quiet, the kind of silence that only comes after midnight. Grandpa, sitting nearby with his pipe resting on the table, looked up and smiled.
“Couldn’t sleep again?” he asked softly.
Grandma chuckled, pulling her shawl tighter around her shoulders. “Sleep is overrated when the night is this beautiful.”
They moved to the porch, where the moonlight painted silver patterns across the garden. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of jasmine. Grandpa reached for Grandma’s hand, their fingers fitting together like puzzle pieces worn smooth by time.
They reminisced about their youth—dances under lanterns, long walks by the river, the first time they had stayed up past midnight together. Each memory was a spark, lighting up the quiet night with laughter.
Grandma pointed to the stars. “Do you remember when we promised to chase dreams as long as we could?”
Grandpa nodded, his eyes glimmering. “And here we are, still chasing them—though slower now.”
The night stretched on, but neither felt tired. Instead, they found comfort in the rhythm of crickets, the glow of the moon, and the warmth of shared stories. After midnight wasn’t just another hour—it was their secret world, where time slowed and love felt endless.
As the clock ticked toward dawn, Grandma leaned against Grandpa’s shoulder. “We may be old,” she whispered, “but nights like this remind me we’re still young at heart.”
Grandpa kissed her forehead. “Always.”
