Off to Lindisfarne

We frequently drive up to Edinburgh and have often said we should visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne that we can see from the main road. Today we finally got there. You need to plan ahead as you can only drive across when the tide is out.

Lindisfarne was one of the early places where Christianity reached England and there were monk in a priory there in the 7th century. The last priory is a ruin thanks to Henry VIII and the ravages of time. It's still an impressive structure. I'm not religious, but I can appreciate the history, even if my teenage son was complaining of boredom. All these photos are from my phone.

I have to wonder if this arch has been reinforced, although I know it's a naturally strong form.

As you can see it was a beautiful day although not exactly summer temperatures. The monks had these fireplaces to warm them, but apparently that didn't apply to all the rooms.

In the distance you can see the later castle that's being renovated. We'll have to return after it's complete next year.

In the church next door was this sculpture. I assume it shows monks carrying the body of one of the saints from there.

It must have been an impressive place in its prime. Just a ruin now. This was from an observation tower on the cliff. Had a great view of the surroundings, including grey seals on the sandbanks, but they were too far away for a good picture.

There are various lighthouses and other beacons around the coast as it looks treacherous to shipping.
