Finally read some Sandman

Although I read plenty of comics as a kid I have only fairly recently got into them again. There is plenty out there aimed at a more mature audience and I have only scratched the surface. I am building a small collection of books now. One comic that gets referenced a lot is Sandman, written by Neil Gaiman. I received this rather splendid edition for my birthday.

It contains a number of stories with assorted artists. They are mostly about the Sandman character who weaves our dreams, but there are some diversions. Gaiman does tend to write dark stories and this gets quite nasty in places. The Sandman does look a bit like Gaiman with his spikey black hair. A Netflix series is being worked on now, but it is going to need lots of special effects to convey the surreal scenarios that are in the comic.

Comics can play around with time and place in ways that are difficult to do with film. With a comic you can take your time to absorb the detail of each panel.

Death is another character, but she does not play a big part in this volume. Some other comic characters pop up, including Batman and the Scarecrow. Another story goes way back in time. I am tempted to get the next volume of this edition to see where it goes.

One of the stories features supernatural investigator John Constantine. I have not read other comics featuring him, but I noticed the movie was on Amazon and I have a free month of that at the moment.

It's fun as a sort of more adult Ghostbusters. As with many similar movies it is all about some great evil needing to be stopped. Keanu Reeves is pretty good in the role even if the character was originally British. Keanu has done a lot of bad-ass fighters such as John Wick. Rachel Weisz covered similar ground in The Mummy series.

On the Amazon Prime page I noticed some very negative reviewas that seemed to come from Christians. Do they not get that the movie and a lot of their religion is fictional? You cannot complain about 'errors on our reality'. At least on Christian did enjoy it for what it is. It is a good versus evil story, although the good guys may be far from perfect. Of course some comic purists will complain it does not match what they expect. I think you have to treat different media as independent things.
