Wednesday Walk - Forest Treasures

Here are a few things found in the forest for this #wednesdaywalk by tattoodjay@tattoodjay

My daughter found a yellow wooly bear caterpillar. In the fall we get a black and tan one, the yellow ones are a bit more rare.

It rained all day for a couple days so the forest was quite muddy. At least the darn mosquitos got waterlogged and only a few bit us.

I found some orange peel fungi right off the bat. It was a good sign to find more mushrooms later.

1000006347.jpg
My wife found the first chanterelle. Big and just in time before all the worms could get to them.

Once you see one it is time to head into tick and sticker infested weeds for more.

1000006346.jpg
Thankfully I had a plastic bag with me for hauling them. Often I end up putting them in my hat.

My daughter was excited to learn how to clean them. Basically pinching off the dirty stem then swishing them in salt water.

1000006358.jpg
Next it is time to let them dry a bit on a towel.

Chanterelles are an easy beginner mushroom to hunt. They are all over the place and the veiny gills and color make them unmistakable.

We found just enough for a pizza. They cook down into almost nothing so you need alot for a meal.

And the finished product. My daughter was impatient while it was cooking and even wanted to just eat the raw pizza. Technically a few raw chants won't hurt you but enough might cause an upset stomach.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

I like to draw and play an assortment of stringed instruments and drums. Prepare for lots of mushrooms and nature photography on this channel as well.
