Mushroom Monday - Weekend Sightings

Here are a few sightings of mushrooms over the weekend for this #mushroommonday

The first sighting is Russula sanguinaria.

I thought someone dropped a piece of apple at first then I picked it and saw the red on the fat stem and was able to confirm it as Russula sanguinaria.

Sadly it is not edible, it is said to be bitter and spicy hot. It gets really mangled as it gets older with way too much rain.

Now for some bird's nest fungi with lots of eggs.

I picked a few and poured out the eggs into my daughter's hands. She's into a birdnest finding phase right now and liked the idea of a mushroom mixed with a nest.

Here is some sort of white mushroom that my daughter spotted.

It started out strong but then the sun came out and baked it so it didn't get to fully open. I took a look at the gills to see if they were pink (test for meadow mushroom or yellow staining). Sadly it remains unidentified.

Here is a super common one growing on a tree outside my condo called Schizophyllum commune.

Its common name is split gill and you can harvest these dry mushrooms and save them for soups. Just drop them into water to soften them up and cook them. Great for collecting a few here and there and storing them in mason jars for use later.
