Fungi Friday - Fairy Ring

It's time for another #fungifriday

This time I found a fairy ring after lots of cooler summer rains.

I suspect there is a stum or something under the dirt causing them to grow in a ring.

They kind of resemble Challah Bread or a bunch of pretzel buns piled up on each other.

1000005623.jpg
I suspect they are mower mushrooms that are typically found on lawns.

But this park had just been landscaped, and new soil has been added which helped fuel the growth of the mycelium off the stump underneath.

It is quite a fractal array of every size possible in this one spot. Teeny tiny ones to larger ones all stacked up in piles.

My daughter had fun picking a few before running off and catching a grasshopper.

Now for something to trigger your trypophobia. These are a bunch of dead man's fingers growing at the base of a tree. Eventually they will elongate and resemble fingers more. For now they kind of look like barnacles. Their Latin name is Xylaria polymorpha, they aren't toxic but not edible (too woody) one cool fact is they are responsible for the pattern in spalted maple as they decompose dead maple trees.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-) Turn away your eyes if you have trypophobia.

I like to draw and play an assortment of stringed instruments and drums. Prepare for lots of mushrooms and nature photography on this channel as well.
