Desde que comencé mis prácticas de dibujo me ha costado muchísimo entender como aplicar luz y sombra en mis dibujos y es que solamente había medio leído o medio escuchado sobre eso, pero nunca había profundizado en ese tema y es que me había enfocado más en solo practicar que en estudiar bien la teoría y sí bien la práctica hace al experto, la teoría es la base de una buena práctica.

Ever since I started my drawing practice, I've had a really hard time understanding how to apply light and shadow in my drawings. The thing is, I'd only skimmed through or heard bits and pieces about it, but I'd never really delved into the subject—I'd focused more on just practicing than on studying the theory thoroughly. And while practice makes perfect, theory is the foundation of good practice.

La luz y la sombra son herramientas súper importantes en el dibujo ya que con ellas se puede transformar una figura plana en una imagen en 3D, o sea, que es lo que nos ayuda a darle volumen al dibujo, cosa que a mi siempre me ha costado muchísimo y que por eso decidí hacer este ejercicio básico para entender mejor la luz y la sombra y ya sin más preámbulo vamos con el ejercicio. 🥰

Light and shadow are incredibly important tools in drawing because they allow you to transform a flat figure into a 3D image—in other words, they’re what help us give volume to a drawing. This has always been really difficult for me, which is why I decided to do this basic exercise to better understand light and shadow. Without further ado, let’s get started with the exercise. 🥰

Para este ejercicio lo primero que hice fue dibujar un círculo. Como mi pulso en estos momentos no es muy bueno, sí, necesito hacer más ejercicios de pulso, lo que hice fue ayudarme con un botecito de pintura al frio para que saliera un círculo perfecto.

For this exercise, the first thing I did was draw a circle. Since my hand control isn't very good right now—yes, I need to practice my hand control more—I used a small jar of cold paint to help me draw a perfect circle.

Con un lápiz de grafito número 4B comencé a sombrear solo una parte del círculo, dejando la parte de arriba y una pequeña parte de abajo sin sombrear.

Using a 4B graphite pencil, I began shading only part of the circle, leaving the top and a small portion of the bottom unshaded.

Luego comencé a difuminar y a oscurecer un poco más una parte de la zona que sombree.

Then I started to blend and darken part of the shaded area a little more.

Continúe oscureciendo un poco más, por cierto este ejercicio lo hice solo con el 4B también pude haber usado un tomo más oscuro para esta parte, pero me interesa aprender a regular la presión de mi mano a la hora de hacer degradados.

Keep darkening it a little more. By the way, I did this exercise using only the 4B; I could have used a darker grade for this part, but I'm interested in learning how to control the pressure of my hand when creating gradients.

Por último dibuje bastante oscura la sombra de la parte de abajo de la esfera.

Finally, draw the shadow at the bottom of the sphere quite dark.

Y este fue el resultado, este ejercicio es muy importante ya que nos permite tener un mapa de iluminación de los objetos y es muy importante hacerlo así, en tradicional con papel y lápiz y ustedes dirán que no es necesario, que es muy obvio, pero a veces lo más obvio, lo que damos por sentado es lo más importante.

And this was the result. This exercise is very important because it allows us to create a lighting map of the objects, and it’s very important to do it this way—the traditional way, with paper and pencil. You might say it’s not necessary, that it’s very obvious, but sometimes the most obvious things—the things we take for granted—are the most important.

Como podemos ver, la esfera tiene un lado que se ve prácticamente blanco pues eso en los objetos se llama brillo🔅 y es el área que está más cerca de la fuente de luz que ilumina dicho objeto, luego está el medio tono que es la transición entre la luz y la sombra, conforme la luz va cayendo sobre el objeto la intensidad va disminuyendo, también tenemos la Sombra propia que es la parte del objeto donde no llega la luz directa,luego también tenemos la luz reflejada, supongamos que la esfera está sobre una mesa, dicha mesa refleja algo de luz sobre el objeto y por último tenemos la Sombra proyectada que es la silueta oscura que la esfera arroja sobre la mesa o la súper donde esté.

As we can see, the sphere has a side that looks practically white; this is called highlight🔅 on objects, and it’s the area closest to the light source illuminating that object. Next is the midtone, which is the transition between light and shadow; as the light falls on the object, its intensity decreases. We also have the self-shadow , which is the part of the object where direct light does not reach. Then there is reflected light—let’s say the sphere is on a table; that table reflects some light onto the object—and finally, there is the cast shadow, which is the dark silhouette that the sphere casts onto the table or the surface where it is located.

Les recomiendo este ejercicio si están como yo batallando con el sombreado de sus dibujos a lápiz, este ejercicio pretendo repetirlo dibujando diferentes objetos hasta sentir que domine la técnica, espero no se aburran de mis prácticas. 🥰🫂

I recommend this exercise if, like me, you're struggling with shading in your pencil drawings. I plan to repeat this exercise by drawing different objects until I feel I've mastered the technique. I hope you don't get bored of my practice sessions. 🥰🫂
