four verses from Mr. Yangming - 阳明先生四句偈
无善无恶心之体,
有善有恶意之动,
知善知恶是良知,
为善去恶是格物。
There is no good nor evil in a pure heart,
Good and evil arise when the heart is tainted by ego's ideas,
It is conscience that knows good and evil,
Cultivating is to eliminate evil while doing good.
For normal people like us whose heart is tainted, we need all four,
but for the pure-hearted ones who can understand instantly, verse 1 and 3 is enough,
like a Buddhist monk Huineng said,
verse four is a joke, true translation should be
no dust can taint nothing.
