Golden Hour Shadows

The sunset was pouring its last rays of warm sunlight over our heads as we stood in an impossibly long line to enter the Taj Mahal. When you visit India, you get accustomed to the chaos it creates, the billion-strong population making it hard to do even the simplest of tasks. Although we were tired after the tiring day, a photographer’s heart can never rest as long as there is something worth capturing. I knew I would regret missing the chance to make the most of this unique and exciting scenery, so I fished out my camera and snapped a few pictures.

There is something incredibly fascinating about the way the sun sets in these parts. As it goes below the horizon, the shadows it casts become unnaturally long. They stretch impossibly far, creating bizarre shapes that give the illusion of depth to whatever they are cast upon. The sun was slowly disappearing behind the building, creating an almost mystical silhouette that made the whole place look unearthly. I was overwhelmed with emotions, the exhaustion vanishing away with the sudden realization of how lucky I was to witness the magic of that moment.

I have attached both color and black and white images for your enjoyment. I think the first one is more beautiful, capturing the mystery of India’s hazy sunsets. However, the second one is equally fascinating, emphasizing the surreal geometry and the fascinating contrast of the whole place.
