And Now, a Word from Our Sponsors

Little Red Riding Hood looked at her dear grandma on the bed and said, “oh grandma, what big teeth you have.”

Grandma bared her fangs into a toothy grin, “all the better to enjoy a nice refreshing Coca-Cola.”

Commercials, man. The bane of our existence. Just imagine how much time of our lives is spent staring at ads.

Groans and moans can often be heard in stadiums during world cup matches because of hydration breaks. These are breaks that the players take during the game in order to refresh and cool down. While necessary it interrupts the game, and we don't mind, but the problem is compounded by some streaming networks that cut to commercials during hydration breaks because they figured nothing interesting is happening on the pitch, so this is a good time to pay the bills.

A Spanish language network in the USA decided that they would not do this because it disrupted the flow of the World Cup experience, which should be savoured like a fine wine that has been aged in ancient oak barrels. So, they took a stand and decided to keep the live broadcasts during hydration breaks.

I know that advertising is necessary, but I think that cutting to commercials is a bit much. It takes you out of that narrative circle that is so crucial to the game of soccer. So, I doodled a futuristic design for a hydration break broadcast with a compromise between enjoyment, analysis, and sober business requirements for our corporate overlords.

I conducted research on the game of soccer to understand the necessary metrics to be displayed. Finally, I took my sketch and research then cranked up the old AI machine to generate this illustration.

I think that it would be great to show game statistics during hydration breaks with a small tidy place for commercials that compliment the design and aesthetics of the graphical overlay. The match would still be shown live and can be spiced up with commentary or multimedia ads displayed on the small window. I think this sci-fi idea would improve the experience during hydration breaks while still showing nice refreshing ads (with potential interactive elements). Let's just not turn it into a spam machine or population control device 'cause that'd be annoying too.

If you're watching the World Cup, what do you think about hydration breaks on match broadcasts?

Thank you for tuning in.
