The Long-Term Impact of Early Childhood Nutrition on Brain Development
Children's early years of life are of crucial importance. The brain develops faster than at any other time of life. Nutrition provides the brain with the energy and nutrients necessary for good brain development. A healthy diet from birth increases children's concentration, memory and learning power. When I think about the proper nutrition of infants and children in early childhood, I believe that is one of the greatest gifts that parents can give to their children to help build their future.
The brain requires a variety of nutrients for proper development. Foods that contain protein help to build brain cells. Fats -- specifically omega 3 fatty acids -- promote brain development and enhance learning. Other vitamins and minerals including iron, iodine, zinc and vitamin D are also important. These nutrients are important for children's attention span, memory and ability to solve problems. Balanced meals provide the brain with the nutrition it needs to develop, when eaten with fruit, vegetables, fish, eggs, milk, beans and whole grains.
Early childhood nutrition impacts can be long lasting. The child might struggle to pay attention in school or remember what is taught if they do not have adequate access to healthful foods. Malnutrition may impair the growth of the brain and impair the child's ability to think clearly. In some cases, these problems can continue into adulthood. Some consequences of poor nutritional status in the first few years of life may not be rectified if the child goes on to have a better diet later in life. This is why it is important for parents and caregivers to keep an eye out from the early stages of a child's diet.
I've seen kids who were more active and concentrated when they ate better. This was the first time I understood the importance of food for mental growth, as well as for physical. It was a reminder for me, that things that I do daily, like providing kids with healthy breakfasts and good snacks rather than too many sugary ones can add up over time.
Another important point to keep in mind is that a well-nourished child will develop emotionally and socially. Proper nourishment in children will allow them to have more energy for playing, learning, and socializing. May also be more skilled in regulating their emotions and with stress. A healthy brain enables children to feel confident, communicate effectively, and relate to family members, teachers and friends in positive ways.
Parents play a major role in the healthy eating habits of children. Creating well-balanced meals, getting kids to drink plenty of water, reducing junk food and educating them about healthy eating habits can become a habit for them. The school and community also play a role in delivering nutrition education and healthy meal programs. A family, school, and health care team working together can help children become healthy and successful adults.
Finally, the importance of good nutrition in early childhood on brain development. Choices of foods in the early years affect children's thinking, learning, recall and social interaction. Eating well helps the brain to grow well, eating badly can lead to issues that can persist for many years. I feel that all children should have access to healthy food for the purpose of helping them attain their potential. Good nutrition for children is one of the greatest investments in their future for the individual, their families, and society.
