The Growing Challenge of Childhood Asthma
Asthma in children is emerging as a major health problem in many countries. The number of children diagnosed with this condition is increasing. Asthma is a condition which involves the air passages of the lungs that makes it hard for a child to breathe. An asthma attack occurs when the airways narrow and swell, resulting in coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. This can impact a child's ability to live a normal life, attend school and overall quality of life. I think that all children should have the opportunities to grow up healthy and this is a concern that will need to be given more attention.
Childhood asthma is increasing for a number of reasons. One of the largest causes of air pollution is caused by it. Children can struggle to breathe if they are exposed to smoke from cars, industries, waste burning and dust. Cooking fumes, pet hair, mold and cigarette smoke are also types of indoor pollution that may cause asthma attacks. Asthma is passed down to some children from their parents, and some children get asthma because of their allergies or repeated respiratory infections. Some children may also find that their asthma symptoms will get worse, due to the effects of changing climate and weather.
Asthma is challenging for kids and their families. Children with asthma may be absent from school through illness or due to the need for medical care. They may also choose not to participate in sporting activities or out-of-door games out of fear of an asthma attack. I once witnessed a young boy in my neighbourhood suddenly trouble with breathing while he was playing football with his friends. His parents immediately gave him his inhaler and after a few minutes he felt better. That experience gave me the realisation of the gravity of asthma and the importance of the need to get children with asthma looked after and supported.
Parents, teachers and health care workers all play important roles in helping children manage their asthma. Parents should ensure children take their prescribed medication and have their child's health checked regularly. Schools should be aware of pupils with asthma and know what to do rapidly in an emergency situation. Teachers should also support asthma children to make sure they feel the same as others rather than different. Governments should also do more to tackle air pollution and deliver better health care.
If a child has asthma he or she can still live an active and a successful life if he or she gets the proper treatment and support. Asthma attacks can be significantly decreased with early diagnosis, correct drug treatment, healthy habits and avoiding the triggers of asthma. It's also important to remind communities about asthma and make sure everyone is aware of the condition and can assist someone if it happens while they are with them.
Finally, this is a serious issue to be taken up by everyone in this world because of the increasing problem of Childhood Asthma. While not all asthma can be prevented, it can be controlled if appropriate care and awareness are provided. I think we can do that, if we all do our part as parents, teachers, health care professionals and members of the community, as participants that will help to make the world a safer and healthier place for children with asthma. All children have a right to breathe, learn, play and have a bright future.
