The Importance of Oral Health in Overall Child Development
Children must have good health to grow well and oral health is a vital component of their health. Oral health is defined as maintaining clean and healthy teeth, gums, tongue and mouth. People believe that a healthy mouth is just about white teeth and that is not the case. A healthy mouth enables children to eat, speak, smile and learn with confidence. I feel that if the parents pay attention to their child's oral health at an early age, they are helping their child create a healthier future.
Oral health is one of the top reasons that it is important for children to eat well. A healthy tooth enables a child to chew their food adequately before swallowing. This makes digestion easier and provides the necessary nutrients for growth. A child doesn't eat when he or she has tooth decay or mouth pain. The child might refuse healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables and meats, because chewing is painful. There have been occasions when I have observed children not eating due to pain in their teeth, and this can make them weak and sad.
Oral health is also important in helping the child develop their speech. Children use their teeth, tongue and lips to say words properly. When a child's baby teeth are lost due to decay, or when they have painful dental issues, it can be hard for them to speak clearly. Children communicate, befriend and succeed in school better with good speech. This is why it is important to take care of children's teeth before all of their permanent teeth have erupted.
A healthy mouth also boosts children's confidence. Children can smile more and enjoy the company of others if their teeth are clean and they have fresh breath. However, a damaged or soiled tooth can make children feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. May refuse to share words, smiles or participate in activities with friends. I feel all children should have a smile for which they aren't embarrassed by their teeth.
Another good side of having a good oral health is enhanced school performance. Children may find it difficult to focus in school due to toothaches. Some children even abscond school due to extreme dental pain and infections. If children are not able to concentrate on learning, then their learning may be affected. I think that proper attention to the health of children's teeth allows them to be active in school and have a pleasant experience of learning without the pain of ill health.
Good oral hygiene is also an effective way of avoiding serious health issues. Disease-causing germs in the mouth can lead to infection which can enter the body if left untreated. By maintaining good gum and dental health, these issues can be minimized. Encouraging children to brush their teeth twice a day, floss regularly and drink water after eating to wash away food particles and bacteria. The regular checkup with the dentist also helps to identify issues before they escalate.
Parents and carers play a very important role in safeguarding children's oral health. They should also engage children in encouraging them to use fluoride toothpaste and limit sugary snacks and drinks, and offer healthy food. Kids tend to imitate adults. Children are more likely to learn proper oral hygiene habits from brushing their own teeth when their parents do it. I think it is important that these are taught at an early age so that they become lifelong.
Children should be educated on oral hygiene by the school also. Brushing, flossing and eating healthy foods are important and can be explained to students through health education programs. In some schools even dental checkups is organised to help in identifying dental problem at an early stage. Togetherness between families, schools and healthcare workers provide children with better care and support.
Finally, oral health plays a very significant role in a child's growth and development! Children with healthy teeth and gums can eat healthy foods, speak clearly, do better in school, and have a good self-esteem. Oral hygiene also helps to avoid pain and serious health issues. From a young age, I think it's important for every child to know about the importance of taking care of their mouths. Brushing, adopting a healthy diet and visiting the dentist can make a world of difference and can help children become healthy and confident adults.
