Quick Gardening Notes

This was my first full growing season at my new townhome. With only container gardening as an option, here are my hits and misses for the year:

  1. Rhubarb is a big hit. I started my rhubarb from seed, so it was inexpensive but slow. Nevertheless, I have a massive rhubarb plant today that was once a seed, along with 2 smaller plants from my second round of seeds. The biggest plant is now in a bigger pot so it will be ready to grow again in the spring.
  2. Ground cherries (actually a relative of the tomatillo or husk tomato) were a great success, too. I used them in a faux "mincemeat" recipe for spicy pies and dried some to use in Christmas stollen this fall.
  3. Radishes did well while I waited for my rhubarb seedlings to grow.
  4. Starting elderberry and blueberry from seed has not worked for me. I will put the seeds in the freezer and try again after they have another "winter." If that doesn't work, there is a farm nearby that sells elderberry and blueberry seedlings.
  5. Catnip is growing nicely for Feeny to enjoy. I will soon put some in the dehydrator so kitty has a winter supply.

There is still a fall growing season in the South here, so I have planted some kale and radishes. Use every bit of sun and rain until that hard freeze comes--hopefully not till January!
