How to Cut and Sew a Bubu Kaftan Dress (Step-by-Step Guide)
This design features a free-flowing fit with a cut-together sleeve and a neat neckline finish.
Cutting Process
Fold the Fabric
Spread your Ankara fabric on a flat surface. Fold it into two equal parts (lengthwise), then fold again to form four layers. This allows you to cut the front and back together, ensuring symmetry.
Mark the Shoulder and Sleeve
On the folded edge, measure 7.5 inches (half of 15 inches shoulder measurement).
From this point, measure down 18 inches for the sleeve length.
Neckline Shaping
For the front neckline, mark:
Width: 3.5 inches
Depth: 7 inches (V-shape)
For the back neckline, mark:
Width: 3.5 inches
Depth: 1.5 inches
Shoulder Slope
From the shoulder edge, slope down by 1.5 inches to give a natural shoulder fit.
Body Width Marking
Since this is a loose bubu style, you will shape it slightly using body measurements:
Measure 12 inches down from the shoulder line to mark the sleeve opening.
From that point, mark your bust, waist, and hip measurements:
Bust: 36 inches ÷ 4 = 9 inches
Waist: 30 inches ÷ 4 = 7.5 inches
Hip: 40 inches ÷ 4 = 10 inches
Add extra allowance for comfort and free movement.
Cutting
Carefully cut out the neckline and the body shape. Remember, the sleeve is already part of the dress (cut-together sleeve), so no separate sleeve is needed.
Sewing Process
Join Shoulder Seam
Open the fabric and sew the shoulder area neatly, leaving the neckline open.
Neckline Finishing
First, use a regular bias to neatly pipe the neckline inward.
Then, attach the shining bias on top (outward-facing) to give it a decorative and polished look.
Sew from the sleeve opening down to the hem, following your marked body measurements. Ensure the stitching is slightly loose to maintain the bubu’s flowing style.
Hem the Dress
Fold the edges of the dress inward, then fold again (double fold) and sew neatly all around the hem.
Attach Fringe
Sew the black fringe underneath the hemline of the dress. This adds style and movement to the outfit.
Final Touches
Press the dress neatly with an iron.
Check all seams for neatness and durability.
Try it on to ensure the fit is comfortable and flowing.
Thanks for stopping by do have a great day.
