Saving Lifes, Safety First
Earthquakes
Hello #qccommunity, I trust you are enjoying your weekend. Sometimes, I wish that some things stayed the way they were. Again, there is a popular saying that prevention is better than cure. However, it takes a prepared and organised person to know what to prevent before preparing.
Having said that, an earthquake is a natural disaster; I also learnt that it is an act of God. I am aware that God does not derive Joy in such damning situations, especially when lives are lost. Well, that’s by the way.
From my findings, an earthquake may sometimes occur on very short notice. As a result, it will require a diligent, smart, and organised team to effect evacuation and save lives on short notice.
In my country of origin, we have witnessed a series of collapses of some high-rise buildings on both the IIsland and mainland with various reasons. While some allegedly happen due to the use of low-quality raw materials during the construction. Another reason is going against the master plan of such a location.
For example, some areas are not meant to harbour high-rise buildings because of soil texture and some geographical reasons; however, individuals will allegedly lobby their way through and obtain permits to erect such buildings. These buildings won’t stand the test of time and will collapse at some point.
Furthermore, some collapses are caused by age. Over time, the structure becomes weak. Again, most times, the regulatory bodies will issue warnings and ask occupants to vacate the building. Owing to the cost of relocating, occupants will continue to risk their lives living there until the worst eventually happens.
Conversely, we as a country haven’t witnessed any form of first-degree earthquake except the above-mentioned incidents; however, there are regulatory bodies that always move around with intelligence tips investigating and assessing buildings before construction and old ones to ascertain their level of vulnerability or strength. When there are imminent signs of danger, they seal the building to avoid casualties.
Therefore, I would say I have little experience in managing signs and issues regarding earthquakes, but the internet and AI tools have educated me not to overlook signs like vibrations and weird noises in any building or surrounding environment. I have to speak up and inform the necessary bodies while I run to a safe zone.
In conclusion, being aware of what our environment says and putting safety first is my action plan in such a situation. I have to be alive to tell the story.
