Pencil Sketch Process: Female Figure Step by Step ✏️

Today I want to share the process of a pencil drawing I did. I like working on sheets that already have something printed on the back, and I found it interesting how the background lines gave texture to the sketch.

The goal was to practice proportions and soft strokes for a figure in a 3/4 view. Here are the steps:

Materials

• White paper
• HB pencil for the base lines
• 2B-4B pencil for shadows and details
• Eraser

Drawing Steps

1. Base structure
I started with a single curved line to mark the back and shoulder. It’s important not to press too hard on the pencil at this stage, just to find the pose.

2. Define the arm and torso flow
I added the line for the arm going down and connecting to the hip. Here you can already start to see the general silhouette.

3. Torso sketch
I marked the shape of the torso and the curve of the hip. I also lightly sketched the bust shape to place it correctly in the space.

4. Refining the outlines
I reinforced the waist and arm line. I added the curve on the other side of the body to give it volume. At this point the drawing starts to take shape.

5. Anatomical details
I added the nipple and areola details, and began with the first soft shadows on the hip area and under the bust to give depth.

6. Hair and final shading
I finished with the hair using quick, loose strokes to make it look natural. Then I blended a bit and added the darker shadows to give the drawing more contrast.

What I learned from this sketch
Working on paper with text in the background pushed me to use more shading and not rely so much on clean lines. It helped me focus on the big shapes before getting into details.

I love how with a pencil you can build the drawing little by little. Sometimes the first stroke is scary, but if you go step by step it works out 😅
