Hidden Beach: A Paradise in the City / Playa Escondida: Un Paraíso en la Ciudad

Just a couple of days ago, I had the chance to reconnect with the Caribbean, since during my trip to the capital I had a completely free day, which, without hesitation, I used to go to the beach. And when we talk about the coast, sand, and sea—especially while in Caracas—we automatically think of the beautiful beaches along the central coast, which span the entire state of La Guaira. It’s here that we can find destinations for every taste, from small coves to wide-open beaches, spots hidden away by nature, and areas that blend perfectly with the city. This trip was fantastic, but by the time this post goes live—three days later—it has become a nostalgic experience, since we’re all aware of the events that unfolded in Venezuela on the afternoon of June 24, when this entire area changed completely.

Hace tan solo un par de días tuve la oportunidad de reencontrarme con el Caribe, puesto que en mi viaje a la capital tuve la oportunidad de contar con una jornada totalmente libre, la cual, sin dudarlo, utilicé para irme a la playa y, cuando se habla de costa, arena y mar, automáticamente, estando en Caracas, pensamos en las hermosas playas del litoral central, las cuales abarcan la totalidad del Estado La Guaira, y es aquí en donde podemos encontrar destinos para todos los gustos, desde pequeñas bahías hasta playas abiertas, lugares escondidos por la naturaleza y espacios que se conjugan perfectamente con la ciudad. Este viaje fue fantástico, pero para el momento de la publicación de este post, a tres días después, se convierte en una experiencia nostálgica, puesto que todos conocemos los acontecimientos sucedidos en Venezuela la tarde del 24 de junio, en donde toda esta zona cambió por completo.

So, with tears in my eyes—yet still feeling the joy of having spent an extraordinary day—I want to share my experience at a beach I’d never been to before. Since it was a weekday, it was empty, and I think it’s thanks to this combination that I was able to spend a fantastic day there—a day when I felt a deep sense of peace, reconnected with nature, enjoyed the sand, and felt the cool waters of the Caribbean.

Así que, con lágrimas en mis ojos, tiempo con el sentimiento de haber pasado un día extraordinario, les quiero contar mi experiencia en una playa que no conocía, que por ser día de semana estaba vacía y creo que es gracias a esta combinación que logré pasar una jornada fantástica en donde sentí mucha paz, me reencontré con la naturaleza, disfruté de la arena y sentí el agua fría del Caribe.

Tanaguarenas was an extraordinary place, as it’s one of those areas in the world where the city practically reaches the seashore. Here, the buildings rose with great vigor, defying the grandeur of the Caribbean, which is also indomitable. Playa Escondida—which was truly hidden—was a place I found extraordinary. It isn’t very large; it has two small strips of rock, and in front of us lies an imposing sea—a sea synonymous with strength, passion, and nature at its finest.

Tanaguarenas era un sitio extraordinario, puesto que se trata de esas zonas del mundo en donde prácticamente la ciudad llega hasta la orilla del mar. Aquí los edificios se alzaban con gran impetuosidad, desafiando la grandeza de un Caribe que también es indomable. Playa Escondida, que realmente estaba escondida, pero es un sitio que me pareció extraordinario. No es muy grande, tiene dos pequeñas franjas de piedra y al frente nos encontramos con un mar imponente, el cual es sinónimo de fuerza, pasión y naturaleza en su mejor expresión.

This is not a beach for the timid, the faint of heart, or simply those new to the art of swimming; here you have to face the open sea with its huge waves, rip currents, and—as I’ll say again—a thrilling force that engages in a fierce battle with every swimmer. This is why it deters some visitors, yet at the same time attracts daring souls and adventurous minds.

No es una playa para personas timoratas, espíritus débiles o simplemente novatos en el arte de la natación; acá hay que hacerle frente a un mar abierto que arrastra grandes olas, corrientes internas y, como lo vuelvo a repetir, una fuerza trepidante, la cual se plantea en una lucha a pulso contra cada bañista y que por esta razón aleja a algunos visitantes, pero al mismo tiempo atrae a espíritus osados y mentes aventureras.

Fate blessed me with a clear day, with intense sunshine and a steady breeze—in other words, the perfect combination for enjoying a swim in the height of summer, when one seeks a tan but also warm water where one can swim and splash around for hours on end, forgetting one’s problems, leaving trivialities behind, and dreaming idyllically of a place where everything is perfect.

El destino me regaló un día despejado, con un sol intenso y una brisa constante, es decir, la combinación perfecta para disfrutar de un baño en pleno verano, en donde se busca una piel bronceada, pero al mismo tiempo un agua cálida, en donde se pueda nadar y chapotear durante horas completas, olvidándose de los problemas, dejando atrás las trivialidades y soñando idílicamente en donde todo es perfecto.

I arrived at this beach alone, since all my friends in Caracas were busy. But that wouldn’t be the reason I’d return to the Andes without the satisfaction of having reconnected with the sea.

A esta playa llegué solo, puesto que mis conocidos en Caracas todos estaban ocupados. Pero esta no sería la razón que me devolvería los Andes sin la satisfacción de haberme reencontrado con el mar.

I had an extraordinary day; I’d arrived very early at sunrise and set out on my return to Caracas as the sunset was already clearly visible. I believe that, in my case, fate wanted me to be there at that precise moment, so that I could fulfill that desire that had eluded me for so many years—and which I now recognize as a nod from those forces that drive life.

Pasé un día extraordinario, puesto que había llegado muy temprano al amanecer y emprendí mi regreso a Caracas cuando la puesta de sol ya era evidente. Creo que en mi caso el destino quiso que yo estuviera ahí en ese preciso momento, para así permitirme cumplir ese deseo que me había sido esquivo durante tantos años y que ahora puedo reconocer que se trata de un guiño por parte de esas fuerzas que mueven a la vida.

Whenever I write a travel post, I usually recommend the place I’ve visited so that others in my country and around the world can enjoy the same wonders that my eyes behold, but today is a bit different, since I don’t know if this beach and its surroundings still exist. All that’s left for me to do is thank life for having taken me there, and at the same time, I pray to God for that town, which is currently going through its darkest times. But as a Venezuelan, I am absolutely certain that we will overcome these difficulties and move forward together, united by that fighting spirit that defines us so well.

Cada vez que alguna publicación de viajes, suelo recomendar el lugar visitado, para que así otras personas de mi país y del mundo puedan disfrutar de las mismas maravillas que ven mis ojos, pero hoy es un día un tanto diferente, ya que no sé si esta playa y su entorno aún existan. Desde acá solo me queda darle gracias a la vida por haberme llevado allí y al mismo tiempo le pido a Dios por ese pueblo que hoy en día vive sus momentos más oscuros, pero como venezolano estoy totalmente seguro de que vamos a sobreponernos ante las dificultades y lograremos salir adelante unidos y con ese espíritu luchador que tanto nos identifica.
