You might think I remembered this story well, but not its title, and it took me a while to recall it. Then the word "Tokyo" popped into my head, and from there, I was able to place it better. I found this anime very good, unfortunately, it wasn't continued, so I was left wanting to see what happened next. However, I searched online for summaries of the novel's ending, so I'll share them later in case you've seen it and were left with questions like I was.

Following this, a traumatic event caused by a spiritual threat occurs, leading the protagonist to decide to become Natsume's familiar. This grants him the ability to see the spiritual world, forcing him to abandon his quiet life and move to Tokyo to enroll in a prestigious military magic academy. There, he will face various threats, secrets, political intrigues, and fanatical cults. Will he be able to protect his childhood friend? Who will these fanatics be after?
Personal opinion
What I liked about this story, at the time, is that it's not your typical superficial school magic series. Although it initially uses some familiar clichés (powerless boy, magic school, romantic comedy with misunderstandings), the narrative has a very dynamic structure. For example, the magic system (Onmyoudou) is surprisingly well thought out and explained very well. Another good aspect is the pacing. While the first few episodes are slow and serve to introduce the group and build the comedy, the second half takes a shocking dark and political turn where conspiracies, real deaths, and betrayals take center stage.
The animation isn't the best, but it's clean, colorful, and visually very appealing; the battles with talismans, fire spells, and seals are animated fluidly and look great. As for the characters, they're well-developed, and you're genuinely surprised by what's in store for the protagonist at the end; Harutora doesn't fall into the cliché of the overwhelmingly powerful hero from day one, nor into that of the useless one who just shouts. He's clumsy, but very loyal and realistic, and I find his relationship with Natsume charming.
SPOILER ALERT: Now, those who have seen it know that, in the end, Harutora, who turns out to be Yakou, manages to revive Natsume. However, he only partially succeeds, as her soul isn't completely bound to her body. This forces Harutora to figure out how to save her completely, which he ultimately does. Furthermore, it's revealed that Yakou wasn't evil or insane, but rather a misunderstood hero who tried to protect Japan from greater spiritual disasters and was misinterpreted throughout the years. Harutora ends up merging his personality with Yakou's and remains with Natsume, as they had promised each other as children.
Positive points…
- Evolution of tone: It starts as a typical school comedy about magic, but gradually transforms into a much darker, more mature, and unpredictable political and conspiracy drama.
- Highly detailed magic system: Onmyoudou isn't just "colored beams." It utilizes talismans, seals, geographical locations, astrology, and military bureaucracy, making battles strategic.
- Character development: The main group doesn't remain static. Harutora evolves from an awkward boy into a highly mature protagonist, and the supporting characters (like Touji and Tenma) truly matter and contribute to the plot.
Negative points…
- Slow and cliché-ridden start.
- Prologue-like feel / No second season: The anime ends at a climactic point where Harutora's true story is just beginning. Because it didn't adapt the rest of the light novels, it leaves a strong sense of incompleteness.

The biggest drawback of this anime was, without a doubt, its incomplete ending, which led people to turn to the novels. I really hoped they would animate it, because, as I said, I found it interesting and the relationship between the protagonists was beautiful.

Pueden creer que recordaba mucho esta historia, pero no su nombre y me costó, hasta que me llegó a la mente la palabra Tokyo y de ahí, pude ubicarla mejor. Este anime me resultó muy bueno, lamentablemente pues no fue continuado (el anime), así que quede con las ganas de ver en que más resultada, no obstante, busque en internet resúmenes del final de la novela, así que, se los daré más adelante por si la vieron y quedaron con las dudas al igual que yo.

Opinión personal
Lo que me gusto de esta historia, en su momento, es que no es la típica serie escolar de magia superficial, a pesar de que, al principio utiliza clichés bastante conocidos (chico sin poderes, escuela de magia, comedia romántica con malentendidos), la narrativa tiene una estructura bastante dinámica, por ejemplo, el sistema de magia (Onmyoudou) está sorprendentemente bien pensado y lo explican muy bien y lo otro es en el ritmo, aun cuando en los primeros episodios, son lentos y sirven para presentar al grupo y construir la comedia. Sin embargo, la segunda mitad da un giro oscuro y político impactante donde las conspiraciones, las muertes reales y las traiciones toman el control.
La animación no es la mejor, pero es limpia colorido y visualmente muy atractivo; los combates con talismanes, hechizos de fuego y sellos están animados de forma fluida y lucen genial. En cuanto a sus personajes, están bien desarrollados y realmente te sorprende lo que se guarda para el protagonista al final; Harutora no cae en el cliché del héroe abrumadoramente poderoso desde el día uno ni en el del inútil que solo grita. Es torpe, pero muy leal y realista, además su relación con Natsume me resulta encantadora.
ALERTA DE SPOILER: ahora bien, quienes la vieron, saben que, al final, Harutora quien resultó ser Yakou, logra revivir a Natsume, no obstante, lo logró a medias, pues su alma no esta fijada completamente a su cuerpo, lo que hace que Harutora debo descubrir como salvarla completamente, al final lo hace con éxito; agregando que, se descubre que Yakou no era malo, ni un loco, sino un héroe incomprendido que intentó proteger a Japón de desastres espirituales mayores y fue malinterpretado a lo largo de los años.
