MONOMAD: New Estuary
Kuala Baru is a settlement in the Indonesian government administration as a sub-district in Aceh Singkil Regency. This name comes from the natural toponymy of the Malay language, which means 'New Estuary'. Land separated by water between the lagoon and the sea is the community's choice for housing. The lagoon is a place of shelter and anchorage for residents' boats. This lagoon is connected to waterways to the Singkil River and the Indian Ocean. The settlement in Kuala Baru is lovely, with people who rely on their livelihoods from peat swamps and the sea.
I was there on January 21, 2025, participating in a cultural survey of riverine community life with the @Mapesa team.
