Sinners: A Blood-Soaked Masterclass in Southern Gothic Horror

Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" is truly an achievement in blending genres together. The story takes place in Mississippi in the 1930s and tells a multi-layered story of the characters’ struggles with their family's past and also addresses the harsh realities of racial inequities that have taken place throughout history until the present day. This all takes a dramatic turn when the film moves into the realm of a high-stakes vampire film.

Michael B. Jordan gives a moving performance as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. Each character has a different persona; therefore, each character’s transformation into something supernatural looks like it has a deep-rooted basis in human emotions.

The brilliance of the film comes from the way in which the film portrays the traumas of past historical events alongside the horror of what those events have led to in present day.
The Atmosphere: Autumn Durald Arkapaw does a tremendous job of using light in a way that makes everything look moody. The "Southern Twilight" of the 1930s was nothing but a gloomy type of light that felt like it would never end.

The Subtext: Ludwig Göransson's bluesy, loud score plays on the emotional chord of the audience by showing that historical facts can and do create monsters, but these monsters exist within the audience and not just within the film.

Sinners not only provides great entertainment value and excitement as a whole, but it also gives you an emotional experience as an audience member. Sinners is unlike anything you have ever seen before; it has a very unique combination of suspense, mood and creativity and it will change your definition of what a "horror" movie is today.
