Fans Prepare PC Port for Kirbys Dreamland 2 and 3

Fans are amazing, often doing what companies won’t. Unfortunately, some fans just seem to want to poke the sleeping bears of gaming. Such as Nintendo. Grape Garden Games have announced they are preparing to release a demo for their PC port of Kirbys Dreamland 2 and 3. Obviously, Nintendo is not involved with this fan port in any way. That means, if you want to grab the demo, you might want to be ready, I am sure Nintendo’s lawyers will be.

What Was Black and White is Now in Color

Graphically, this project is on the right track. It is impressive looking and sounding. Easily an improvement over what was possible on the Nintendo Game Boy. No argument there.

Fans will definitely want to grab this demo when it releases on May 30th.

Not So Smooth Sailing

Obviously moving to PC from the original Nintendo Game Boy means color, parallax scrolling, and improved graphics. When dealing with a game by Nintendo, or Square Enix, that also means the chances of a Cease-and-Desist dropping are nearly 100%.

Unfortunately, Nintendo’s lawyers are probably waiting for the signal to pounce on this project.

If you are working on a game based on someone else’s property, your best bet is to announce it after it has released. Sure that is not nearly as fun or will build up fanfare like announcing a demo then later, hopefully, announcing a release date for the full game will.

It also avoids getting fans excited about your project only to see it taken away by companies protecting their property.

My question for these teams is, why not create an original title? You obviously have the skills to do it, especially when the game is completely remade from the ground up with new graphics, engine, sound, etc.

Just make an original game at that point. Pay homage to the original but in a new, and original, way.

As Time Extension has pointed out Nintendo is very litigious when it comes to protecting their properties.
