Sony Ending Physical Games in 2028

Sony recently announced they are ending production of physical PlayStation games in January 2028. Done. Gone. This means the PlayStation 6 will obviously be digital only. This is sad news for gamers as collecting, buying, selling, trading, etc are all drastically changing – some portions are completely dead with this news such as selling or trading.

Physical Releases Missing Key Media

Sony’s Sid Shuman went onto state in his PlayStation Blog post that retailers will continue to sell new games in digital formats only. This means they are following how Rockstar is selling GTA VI in stores – a digital download code is inside the box.

Anyone remember the backlash Microsoft got for trying to do DRM on physical games? Let’s just say, this did not age well.

Used game sales are effectively dead with the PlayStation 6 and whatever Microsoft names the Xbox 1024 Reversed Overloaded Super Duper Edition or something ignorant).

Want to trade games with your friends so you can all experience new games without being independently wealthy at age 9? Forget it. Dead. Done. Not happening.

Want to trade in your older titles for trade credit with stores like Gamestop? Nope, not with PS6 or the XDuper Edition.

Sad Day for Gamers

It is a sad day for gamers. I get it, most sales are apparently digital anymore, at least on PlayStation 5. I do have to question how many of those games were available on both digital and physical formats. If the majority of games were digital only then it is easily a skewed point of view and faulty details resulting in an unfair comparison – fans cannot buy a game in physical format if it is not offered – same if it is not offered in digital format.

It looks like, if you enjoy having a physical disc that you can do what you want with, gaming companies are leaving you, and me, behind with this generation of consoles. Honestly I stopped back with the 360 and PlayStation 3 as there were far more games I wanted to play than I had time so I simply stopped buying consoles.

Is this where you step out of keeping up with modern gaming or are you okay with digital only gaming? PC gamers, which I am mostly, seemingly have been fine with digital for decades now.
