Let Sleeping Ducks Lie
Smallsteps met me in the city after my meeting and we wandered around a little for a looksee, with the plan to head home and go for a swim together. However, while we were looking for a dress for her mother (for a wedding), she got a call from her friend and we decided she would go there to play and we'd have an evening swim instead. And it worked out pretty well, because I had time to do some more work in the basement, she got to play with her friend, and we got to swim with some very sleepy local ducks.
We swim at this beach regularly enough and there are normally ducks around, but they tend to move away from the swimmers and, they normally aren't sleeping at seven in the evening. But these ones were all asleep when we arrived (no one was swimming at that point) and continued on sleeping most of the time that we were in the water. There were a few other people who came for an evening swim and yet, the ducks just stayed where they were.
Smallsteps wanted to get a bit closer and asked if they would attack her, and I said - yes, probably. She went closer anyway of course, but she is about as gentle a soul as can be and crept slowly in the water until she was a couple meters away. A couple of them looked at her, but realised there wasn't much of a meal to be had, and went back to sleep.
Before the swim, the three of us went to a local factory area where they had a kind of food fair of a sort, with various food trucks that tour around Finland and stay a couple days in each place. It is a good idea and the location for it is great (old repurposed factory in development) but to be honest, the food wasn't all that great and a little more expensive than it should have been, for what it was. Still, it took care of dinner and since it was outside, I didn't have to have a shower after working in the basement.
I walk around with constant paint on me - even after a shower.
And while I didn't shower (I wasn't very messy yet), my wife was coming from work so she was dressed up in comparison. This is the normal run of things around here, since I have no style these days - which is something that has happened quite quickly in the last decade.
I used to be well-dressed, now I am well, dressed.
It might stay warm tomorrow, but the rains are returning which will mean that the lake water (which was already freezing) will stay cold. I can already smell the end of summer in the air and July hasn't even finished yet. I am not even sure if summer has started, but it is possible that August will see some warmer days, but there are definitely no guarantees for that here. And once the last hopes of warmth are dashed, then it will be the acceptance that it will be another 10 months until the opportunity arises again, with bitter cold between.
At least the ducks will fly somewhere warmer to sleep.
