Hello to everyone in this community and fellow sewing enthusiasts! Last year I had the opportunity to sew my mother a more elaborate birthday gift, but since I was out of town for longer than expected, time got away from me and I ended up having to improvise. So, I thought I'd make my mother a toiletry bag, a fabric case she could use to put whatever she wanted in. Something simple, but since I'm always giving her things I sew (when she really likes them), I didn't want to arrive at her birthday empty-handed 😆 Anyway... let's talk about the process 😊

For this project, you'll need the main fabric. It can be a solid color or patterned; in my case, I found a very pretty floral print among my fabric scraps, in the colors my mother likes. This fabric was fairly firm, but I felt it wasn't firm enough, so I thought I'd use some interfacing, which would help with that. For the lining, I opted for waterproof fabric, as well as a 20 cm plastic zipper.

As for the pieces to assemble the toiletry bag, I cut a rectangle approximately 32 x 21 cm, a long piece about 4 cm wide, and some oval shapes whose outline matched the dimensions of the rectangle's sides. I cut the waterproof fabric to the size of the rectangle, and for the interfacing, I ironed the pieces of printed fabric, except for the small strip.

When it came to sewing, I started with the small piece of fabric, which would serve as a handle. It was enough to fold it, sew a straight stitch along it, turn the piece right side out, and finally sew a straight stitch along both ends.

Next, I sewed the waterproof lining to the pieces that I had already coated with interfacing. If you use a sufficiently stiff fabric, you can skip the interfacing step.

After that came my favorite part... sewing the zipper (note the sarcasm) haha ​​just kidding. It's not that I don't like sewing zippers, it's just that it's much easier or looks much nicer when you have a zipper foot, since it allows you to sew closer to the zipper teeth than with a regular sewing foot. Also, some sewing machines have the feature to move the needle slightly to the left... mine doesn't have that feature, and I don't have a zipper foot either, so I have to make do as best I can haha.

But anyway, let's stop talking about my sewing woes 😅 After sewing the zipper along the edges, I cut some strips of waterproof fabric to use as bias tape, sewing them along the edges and thus covering the zipper seams on the main piece. This will give our work a cleaner finish, looking nice both inside and out.

To finish the closure, I sewed a seam along both sides to better secure it to the flaps created internally with the bias tape. I also sewed the handle I had made earlier onto one end and a small label on the other, certifying that this piece was made by me with lots of love and care 😉

What was left was to sew the oval pieces to the ends of the toiletry bag, as well as attach the bias tape to the edge. I admit it... that was the part where I struggled the most because I didn't measure the oval correctly (I basically did it by eye) and I had to unpick stitches to adjust it... and unpicking black thread on a black background is terrible for me (In fact, I can't work on dark backgrounds for very long because my eyes suffer 😢), so I ended up visually exhausted, but I managed to fix it and make it look much better than the first attempt. Remember, if you have any mishaps while sewing, don't get discouraged, take a few minutes to rest and then come back to the project. Sometimes, tiredness makes us make mistakes, and we're only human 💔.

And just like that, the makeup bag was ready! ✨ It wasn't perfect, but I was so happy to have a little gift ready for my mom on time. So happy, when she received it and liked it, she'd finally have somewhere to put her cosmetics in her purse (she was using a bag for that 😅). I felt like all the unstitching and frustration was totally worth it, haha. Now, I want to make more makeup bags like this one, but for my online shop, using different prints and maybe other shapes, applying the knowledge I gained while making this one 😇

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes de la costura! El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de coserle a mi madre un regalo más elaborado por su cumpleaños, pero, como estuve fuera de la ciudad más semanas de lo esperado, el tiempo me ganó y acabé por tener que improvisar un regalo. Para eso, pensé en elaborarle a mi madre un neceser, es decir, un estuche de tela para que lo utilizara para colocar dentro lo que ella deseara. Algo sencillo, pero como siempre ando regalándole piezas que coso (cuando terminan gustándole mucho), por lo menos no quería llegar a su cumpleaños con las manos vacías 😆 En fin... hablemos del proceso 😊

Para este proyecto, se necesita la tela principal. Puede ser una tela unicolor o estampada, en mi caso, conseguí entre mis retazos de tela, una muy linda con estampados de flores, con los colores que a mi madre le gustan. Esta tela, era algo firme... pero sentía que no lo suficiente, así que pensé en utilizar algo de entretela, me ayudaría con eso. También, para forro, preferí usar impermeable, así como un cierre plástico de unos 20 cm.

En cuanto a las piezas para armar el neceser, corté un rectángulo de 32 x 21 cm aproximadamente, un trocito largo de más o menos 4 cm de ancho y unas formas ovaladas que tuvieran en su contorno, la medida de los laterales del rectángulo. Corté el impermeable con la medida del rectángulo y en el caso de la entretela, planché las piezas de la tela estampada, a excepción de la tira pequeña.

A la hora de coser, comencé con el trocito de tela, el cual, serviría para hacer un agarradero. Bastó con doblarlo, pasarle una costura recta, voltear la pieza y finalmente pasar una costura recta en ambos extremos.

Luego, procedí a coserle el forro impermeable a las piezas a las cuales, le había colocado la entretela. Si se utiliza una tela lo suficientemente rígida, podemos saltarnos el paso de la entretela.

Después de eso, vino mi parte favorita... pegar el cierre (nótese el sarcasmo) jaja mentira. No es que no me guste pegar cierres, sólo que es mucho más fácil o queda mucho más lindo cuando cuentas con el pie de máquina para coser cierres, ya que el mismo, permite que puedas coser más apegado a los dientes del cierre que con el pie de máquina que se suele usar habitualmente. También, hay algunas máquinas de coser que tienen la funcionabilidad de mover la aguja un poco hacía la izquierda... en el caso de la mía, no tiene esa función, ni tampoco tengo el pie de cierre, así que me toca batallar como mejor pueda jaja.

Pero bueno, dejemos de hablar de mis penurias como costurera 😅 tras coser el cierre en los bordes, corté unas tiras de impermeable para utilizarlas a modo de sesgo o bies, cosiendo las mismas en los bordes y cubriendo así, las costuras del cierre a la pieza principal. Esto, le dará un acabado más "limpio" a nuestro trabajo, viéndose bonito tanto por fuera, como por dentro.

Para finalizar con el cierre, le pasé una costura en ambos laterales, para que el mismo se fijara mucho mejor a las "solapas" que se crearon internamente con el sesgo. Del mismo modo, cosí en un extremo el agarradero que había hecho anteriormente y del otro, una pequeña etiqueta, la cual certifica que esa pieza, fue hecha por mí, con mucho amor y cariño 😉

Lo que faltaba, era coser las piezas ovaladas a los extremos del neceser, así como colocarles el sesgo en el borde. Lo admito... fue la parte en dónde más sufrí porque no tomé bien la medida del óvalo (básicamente lo hice al ojo por ciento) y tuve que descoser para acomodarlo... y descoser hilo negro en fondo negro, es terrible para mí (De hecho, no puedo trabajar mucho tiempo sobre fondos oscuros porque mi vista, lo resiente 😢), así que acabé agotada visualmente, pero pude solucionar y lograr que quedase mucho mejor que la primera costura. Recuerden, si tienen algún percance a la hora de coser, no se desanimen, tómense unos minutos para descansar y retomen luego la pieza. En algunos casos, el cansancio nos hace cometer errores y somos humanos 💔.

Y de esa forma, el neceser estuvo listo ✨ No quedó perfecto, pero me alegré de tener listo a tiempo un pequeño regalo para mí madre, tanto, que cuando ella lo recibió y le gustó, pues ahora tendría dónde poner sus cosméticos en su bolso (estaba usando una bolsa para ello 😅), sentí que la descosida y la frustración, valió la pena jaja Ahora, quiero elaborar más neceseres como este, pero para mi tienda online, utilizando otros estampados y quizás otras formas, aplicando el conocimiento que obtuve mientras elaboraba este 😇
