The News

On my new PC I was having some issues running the Python script I have used to fetch prices from coingecko@coingecko to create a chart. I finally managed that today after some searching around for ideas. $HIVE continues to hover around 6c, but keeps getting us excited when it looks like going up. It seems the markets still lack confidence in it if they have even heard of it. As has been discussed recently they may be confused by the name.

Prices from @coingecko

As of today risingstargame@risingstargame has been shut down, but there are plans to revive it. wagginston@wagginston is working on this, but we have to be patient. It needs converting away from the obscure programming platform used previously. User accounts have been saved and I would assume that the blockchain transactions have all the necessary history. This is one of the big advantages of a blockchain in that you do not depend on some central store of data.

Friday Follows

  • friendlymoose@friendlymoose created a Hive account health dashboard that gives you an overview of what an account has been up to. You can see how active they are and if they are good community members.
  • zusi78@zusi78 used that dashboard to check on some accounts that seemed to be offering airdrops. We should always be suspicious of such things. You have to decide who to trust and trust needs to be earned.
  • On the Rising Star front, thehive@thehive had some thoughts on whether the game needs limits. This followed a somewhat heated discussion in the Discord. Getting the economics of a game right is tricky as you want to avoid too much inflation that devalues the rewards. I am sure the new team will look into this.
  • livinguktaiwan@livinguktaiwan and revisesociology@revisesociology have been posting updates on their gardens. I may do this too. It is interesting to see what others are up to. They are both in the UK so may be comparable to my garden, but we have gardeners from around the world on Hive.
  • dannewton@dannewton has been out with his moth trap again and had much more success this time.

The Dog House

I mentioned last week that certain people accused me of conspiring against them and being in league with downvoters, but that is still not true. You will find no evidence as it never happened. Maybe someone I upset is telling lies about me, but I always try to be honest online as lies can come back to haunt you. I have been public about dealing with abuse years ago, but I have always tried to act for the good of the community. Others will still act on what they consider to be abuse, but that is a personal choice.

Like many I joined the original social blockchain in hope of earning something, but I really do not worry too much about that these days given the current price. I think we have value in a platform that is not controlled by huge corporations. Anyone is free to build on it and so we get cool games and applications. Maybe those can attract some new users and we need to make them welcome.

Of course I am disappointed that Hive is not much bigger, but there are so many other things trying to grab attention. That is why I am disappointed when good people decide to leave and I have seen that many times. Sometimes it is because they consider that others have been unfairly treated. I am not a big fan of downvotes as a blunt weapon, but how people react to them can make it worse. I would prefer talking to resolve differences, but then I am not into confrontation. I have been called a fool for that more than once!

Hive is a rigged system in that a few people have a lot of power, but I think most of them try to use it responsibly as that is in their interest. If it could grow to many more users who build their HP then the power balance will shift, but as things stand you will not get far if you go around upsetting people. Hive is very small and troublemakers stand out. Growth will bring fresh challenges.

The End

I need to look into getting my #BritList script working for next weekend once we are into June(!). I have to hope that the numbers can increase. I am happy to help others start building their own local lists. I do these things for fun and to help the community. I do not expect to get paid at all.

Have a great weekend and Hive five!
