Mushroom Monday - First Finds

Finally the mushrooms are growing for this #mushroommonday

Here is a nice Pluteus cervinus growing out of a dead piece of wood. It really shined in the sun almost a copper bronze.

They tend to grow in groups and I found a few smaller ones in the leaves nearby.

If you flip them over you can see they have a skinny straight stem that doesn't attach to the gills.

The gills are also quite white when they are fresh and they start turning pinkish as they get older. These are edible but you can easily mix them up with deadly amanita species. Their taste isn't terribly special either so I have only eaten them once. They are nice to find as they are large interesting looking mushroom. Often they indicate the presence of morel season in full swing.

Meanwhile I found this huge polypore, maybe a red belted polypore? But it got run over by a lawnmower in someone's yard.

I flipped it over and it is definitely not from this year. The lawnmower must have grazed a stump with this thing on it and flung it far from its original location. If this was in cattle country I would have thought it was just manure lol.

That's all the finds for now but I'll be looking for some morels in my secret areas now that the deershield mushrooms are out.
