Hello friends/Saludos amigos.

On a vacant lot that used to be a playground behind the building, the residents have been planting various trees: avocado, banana, soursop, and a mango tree (Manguifera indica). It is very leafy, like most of these trees, and produces plenty of fruit over several months of the year.

En un terreno baldio que anteriormente era un parque infantil detrás del edificio, los habitantes han ido sembrando algunas plantas: aguacate, musáceas, guanábana y un árbol de mango (Manguifera indica). Es muy frondoso como la mayoría de estos árboles y produce muchos frutos durante varios meses al año.

Even though the mango is not native to my country, Venezuela, it has adapted so well to our tropical climate that we now consider it our own.

Aún cuando el mango no es una especie autóctona de mi país Venezuela, se ha adaptado tan bién a nuestras condiciones tropicales que ya lo consideramos nuestro.

The fact is, mangoes are delicious and very nutritious, and you can see them lying on the ground and piled up against the walls of houses—people put them there for others to take, because there are so many that they can’t eat them all.

Y es que el fruto del mango es delicioso y muy nutritivo y por las calles se pueden ver los frutos en el suelo y sobre los muros de las casas que las personas colocan allí para que se los lleven, porque son tantos que no los pueden consumir todos.

The mango tree in the yard was laden with fruit again, even though a few weeks earlier several people—myself included—had picked some unripe fruit because I love making mango jam and jelly, which are made with green fruit. Most of the fruit was on the highest branches, so a neighbor knocked them down with a stick and shared some of the harvest with us.

El mango del patio estaba de nuevo cargado, aunque semanas antes varias personas habían cosechados frutos que no habían madurado, entre ellas yo porque me encanta preparar carato y jalea de mango que se hacen con el fruto verde. La mayoría de los frutos estaban en las ramas mas altas así que un vecino los bajó con una vara y nos dió parte de la cosecha.

He told us that kids throw stones at the tree to knock the fruit down, but all they do is break the branches. That’s because mangoes fall on their own when they’re ripe, and many of them have been pecked at by the little birds that feed on them.

El nos contaba que los muchachos les tiran piedras al árbol para tumbar los frutos y lo que hacen es quebrarles las ramas. Porque el mango cae por si solo cuando ha madurado y muchos de estos frutos están picados por los pajaritos que se alimentan de estos frutos.

The harvest was very good; we brought home more than 20 mangoes, and I used them to make mango jam, which I shared with my family.

La cosecha fue muy buena trajimos a la casa mas de 20 mangos y con estos preparé una jalea de mango que compartí con mi familia.

Green mangoes are very tart, so you have to add quite a bit of sugar to the jam. Some people eat them chopped up with salt and seasoning.

El mango verde es muy ácido y hay que agregar bastante azúcar a la jalea. Algunas personas lo comen picado con sal y adobo.

I left a few to ripen. This type of mango is what we call "hilacha." It's a small fruit with lots of fibers. I usually eat it by cutting a hole in the skin, sucking on it until no more juice comes out, and then eating what's left of the flesh and the skin.

Dejé algunos para que maduraran. Este tipo de mango es el que llamamos hilacha. Es un fruto pequeño con muchas fibras que acostumbramos comer abriéndole un hueco en la concha y chupandolo hasta que no salga jugo y luego comiendo lo que queda de pulpa y la concha.

It's a very sweet and tasty fruit. I love eating mangoes, even though they stain my hands and mouth bright yellow. There's another type of small mango that's firmer and has fewer strings; it's sweet and very easy to eat. We call it a bocado mango.

Es un fruto muy dulce y sabroso. Me encanta comer mango aunque al hacerlo me llene todas las manos y la boca de su intenso color amarillo. Hay otro tipo de mango pequeño que es mas consistente y tiene pocas hilachas, es dulce y muy fácil de comer. Lo llamamos banco bocado.

Planting mango trees along city streets is an excellent reforestation strategy; they provide ample shade and bear fruit for several months of the year. They also serve as a refuge for birds and other animals. During the years of economic crisis in my country, many people were able to feed themselves with these fruits.

Sembrar árboles de mango en las calles de la ciudad es una muy buena estrategia de reforestación, dan una gran sombra y frutos durante varios meses al año. Además son un refugio para aves y otros animales. Muchas personas durante los años de crisis económica en mi país pudieron alimentarse de estos frutos.
