Today I want to quickly share with you something that has always fascinated me in the world of birds: brood parasitism. It's an almost secret phenomenon, we could say, that occurs between species and demonstrates just how complex and surprising survival strategies can be in nature.

Es un fenómeno casi secreto, podríamos decir, que ocurre entre especies y que demuestra cuán complejas y sorprendentes pueden ser las estrategias de supervivencia en la naturaleza.

In Cuba, we have a wonderful example with the Shiny Cowbird (Melotrus bonaerensis), or vaquero bird as it's known, and its relationship with birds of the genus Agelaius, such as the Tawny Shouldered Blackbird (Agelaius humeralis), better known as the Mayito. The Shiny Cowbird doesn't build its own nests; instead, it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, like the Tawny Shouldered Blackbird, so that they raise its chicks as if they were their own. It's perhaps an act of forced trust or involuntary surrender.

En Cuba, tenemos un ejemplo maravilloso con el Shiny cowbird (Melotrus bonaerensis) o pájaro vaquero como le conocemos y su relación con las aves del género Agelaius, como el Tawny Shouldered blackbird (Agelaius humeralis), más conocido como Mayito. Shiny cowbird no construye nidos; en cambio, deposita sus huevos en los nidos de otras aves, como el Tawny Shouldered blackbird, para que estos críen a sus polluelos como si fueran propios. It moves me to think of the Tawny Shouldered Blackbird's effort, feeding and protecting a chick that isn't its own, while the Shiny Cowbird continues its cycle, free from parental ties. It's an example of how nature doesn't always follow rules of fairness, but rather of pure adaptation. Sometimes cruel, sometimes brilliant, but always honest in its purpose: to persist.
