A POEM ABOUT MY COUNTRY’S CURRENT SITUATION.

Do you remember the Chibok girls?

I do.

Let me walk you down memory lane.

They were children like some of us,

Sent to get an education for a better future, but were deprived of it.

It was just a normal day like every other day.

Maybe it was even the second period and it was time for Mathematics.

They had all settled down for another x - y = 0.

But the next thing that greeted them was the sound of gunshots from outside.

Maybe some escaped, but 276 schoolgirls were abducted.

We thought it was about religion,

Or maybe even the gender inequality that a girl child faces,

But there was more to it.

Do you see the pattern already?

Or let me continue.

They took everything those girls had for years!

Some became mothers at 14.

Some were killed.

Some were sexually exploited.

Some were eventually rescued after years in captivity.

Do you see the pattern yet?

Didn’t the masses seek the government’s help?

We did!

Where was the government then?

In their positions.

But now, it’s crystal clear:

We’re in trouble.

Children are still being abducted in broad daylight in a nation that has a president and supposed security.

Communities are still being attacked.

Families are still being torn apart.

There is a mother somewhere watching her whole future being tortured before her eyes.

Tell me,

Do you really think the government will do anything?

We are in big trouble.

Have you wondered what the military men are doing?

You’d wonder how there’s fire on the mountain and nobody seems to be on the run.

Asa said it, but we thought it was just a song to dance to:

“Could it be love for your country,
Or for the gun you use in killing?”

We sang it.

We danced to it.

But did we listen?

I stand today in tears, pain, and regret for my nation, Nigeria.

A nation where insecurity has become a daily headline.

A nation where too many innocent lives have been lost.

A nation where citizens cry for protection and are often left disappointed.

How many more do you want to kill to satisfy your greed?

How many more dreams do you want to destroy?

How many more families must mourn?

Don’t worry.

Every day may be for the thief,

But it’s painful that only one day seems reserved for the owner.

The irony of life.

Thank you.
