After the Celebration, Back to Zero

After the Celebration, Back to Zero

One thing I have noticed, especially here in Africa, is how people spend money during festive periods.
When it’s time to celebrate, everything changes. People bring out money from everywhere. Clothes, food, parties, travel, gifts, spending just increases from all angles.
During that period, it feels like money is not a problem.

But once the celebration ends, reality shows up.
You start hearing things like “January is long” or “money don finish.” And it’s not just talk, you can actually feel it. People who were spending freely just weeks ago suddenly start managing every small thing.
It’s like going from 100 to zero almost immediately.
I’m not saying celebrating is bad. It’s normal. Everyone wants to enjoy, especially after working hard. Festive periods are meant for happiness, family, and relaxation.

But the problem is how people go all in without thinking about what comes after.
Some people spend almost all their savings just to enjoy for a short period. Some even borrow money just to keep up with others. At that moment, it feels worth it, but later it becomes stressful.
Bills don’t stop because a celebration just ended.
Rent is still there. Feeding is still there. Daily expenses are still there. Life continues.
That’s where the issue comes in.
Instead of balance, it becomes extreme. Too much spending in a short time, then struggle immediately after.

I have seen it happen many times.
People will buy things they don’t really need, just because it’s festive season. They upgrade their lifestyle for that short moment, then struggle to maintain basic things after.
Social pressure as we know it, also plays a big role.
Nobody wants to be left out, When others are enjoying themselves, posting, traveling, and buying new things, these pushes people to do stupid stufs, even when it’s not convenient for them.
But the truth is, not everything we see is real or sustainable. Some people are also stretching themselves just to keep up appearances.

I think the better way is simple, enjoy, but with sense.
There’s nothing wrong with celebrating, but it shouldn’t leave you empty after. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Spend what you can afford, not what will put you in a tight position later.
Even small planning can make a big difference.
Set aside what you need first, then use what’s left to enjoy. That way, when everything is over, you’re not starting from zero again.
Because starting over again and again is tiring.
At the end of the day, celebrations come and go, but financial stability is something you have to protect long term.
Enjoy the moment, yes.
But don’t forget the life waiting after the celebration ends.
