Slow-Cooker Pulled Pork
Introduction
Indulge in this heavenly pulled pork recipe inspired by classic American barbecue. The slow cooker transforms simple ingredients into a succulent dish, with tender pork steeped in a rich, flavorful sauce. Perfect for any gathering or a comforting family dinner, it's both easy to make and incredibly rewarding.
Ingredients
🧅 1 red onion, sliced
🐖 1 pork shoulder, 3 lbs
🍅 1-2 tablespoons tomato purée, Tomato Paste
🧄 1 tablespoon minced garlic
🌶 1-2 teaspoons chili flakes
🌶 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
🍬 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
🌿 1 teaspoon ground cumin
🌿 1 teaspoon dried thyme
🍃 2-3 bay leaves
🥫 1 can canned chopped/whole tomatoes, 400g or 14.5 oz
🍺 1 can Heineken lager, 330ml or 11.2 fl oz
🧂 Salt from a generic wooden top salt grinder
🧂 Black pepper from a generic wooden top pepper grinder
Instructions
1- Preparation:
- Place the sliced red onion at the bottom of your Swan slow cooker.
- Lay the pork shoulder on top of the sliced onions.
2- Layering Ingredients:
- Spoon the tomato purée over the pork.
- Add the minced garlic over the pork.
3- Spice It Up:
- In a small glass bowl, mix the chili flakes, smoked paprika, brown sugar, ground cumin, and dried thyme.
- Sprinkle this spice blend evenly over the pork.
- Place the bay leaves on top.
4- Liquid Infusion:
- Pour the canned tomatoes over the pork and spices.
- Open the Heineken lager and pour it into the slow cooker.
5- Seasoning:
- Season the entire mixture generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
6- Cooking:
- Briefly stir the contents to slightly combine the ingredients around the pork.
- Cover the slow cooker with its lid.
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the pork is very tender and falls apart easily.
7- Shredding & Finishing:
- Once cooked, use two forks to shred the pork directly in the slow cooker.
- Stir the shredded pork into the sauce, allowing it to absorb the flavors.
8- Serving:
- Serve hot, perhaps over buns, rice, or with a side of coleslaw.
