Instinct

Sometimes life forces us to make decisions when we are short of time, lacking in information and cannot be sure whether the chosen course of action is correct. In these moments, instinct is our guiding light. Instinct is an inner feeling, an unconscious voice which pushes us towards a course of action before the conscious mind is capable of analyzing the issue thoroughly. While some rely on this guide entirely, others prefer careful deliberation. I believe that instinct has its merits but must always be combined with experience and reason.
Many of our instincts are based on experience. Though we may be largely unaware of it, our minds collect and register patterns from situations which we have previously faced. When a similar situation occurs again our instincts tell us how to act immediately. For example, we might meet a new person whom we feel a sudden sense of discomfort towards or perhaps an immediate affinity with. Though we cannot always pinpoint the exact cause of these feelings our subconscious mind might have picked up on something which our conscious minds failed to notice.
Relying on instincts can be extremely helpful in cases where speed of action is of paramount importance. Athletes, firemen, doctors as well as everyday individuals, all sometimes rely on their instincts where they cannot afford to think about every single aspect of the situation. These instincts sometimes tell them the right thing to do and help them to avoid mistakes; at other times they might even provide an opportunity that reason might dismiss as a result of fear or caution.
On the other hand, it is crucial to realize that instincts are not always correct. The way we feel at any particular time. By allowing ourselves to be ruled by fear we may turn down the chance of a lifetime whereas over-confidence might lead us into unnecessary danger. When judging people, over-reliance on instinct is fundamentally unfair, since appearances are notoriously deceiving and a first impression might turn into a lifelong friendship.
Therefore, I believe instinct to be merely a useful, rather than absolute guide. It can give direction but should not replace our faculty for rational thought. Where it is feasible, instincts must be tested against evidence and facts. If both our instincts and our reasoning indicate the same conclusion, our faith in that decision must surely be justified.
Ultimately, instinct is a human experience. It assists us when facing the unknown and forcing decisions without clear answers. Although they may not always be correct, our instincts are nonetheless an invaluable, albeit unreliability tool that must always be used in conjunction with wisdom and informed consideration.
