Your Voice Matters in the Ballotbox In every election, citizens are urged to "vote wisely" and to "vote your conscience." Rarely, however, will you be told who the "best" candidate for the position is. This is because the foundation of democracy rests on the principle of free choice. All voters possess different beliefs, priorities, values, and experiences; therefore, the choice that seems most favorable for one voter may not be in the best interest of another.

Some people believe that it might be easier to inform voters who the "correct" or preferred candidate is, particularly if an individual perceives that one particular candidate is far superior to all other options. Nevertheless, such an approach, if implemented broadly, could erode the principles of democratic voting. In democratic elections, individual will is paramount.

Informing voters whom to cast a ballot for could make them passive participants, willing to accept directions and unable to evaluate candidates on their own.

This could facilitate corruption, propaganda, and bias to undermine the sanctity of the democratic election process. Instead, emphasis should be placed on enlightening the voters so they can independently decide on the best candidate to entrust with their representation. A voter must assess the candidate’s resume, level of expertise, integrity, strategic vision, accomplishments, etc. He/she should be very cautious of misleading information, campaign propaganda, as well as vote-selling practices which can contribute to the erroneous decision making.

Hence, making a conscious vote will enable us to make a well informed decision.

In many cases, voting with our conscience means making decisions not necessarily based on emotions, but instead based on honesty, fact, morality, principles, our own standards and the greater good of society. In order to do this, a responsible choice needs to be made when voting, as our individual votes contribute to the well-being of our community, and our country as a whole. A democracy would likely grow to be the strongest if every citizen were given the option to vote for whomever they pleased.

Therefore, despite any advice provided to citizens by leaders, mentors, parents, educators, religious affiliations etc., in a democracy it rests on the shoulders of the citizens themselves to make a wise vote that most appropriately represents their personal vision.
