Designer Babies
Some people think that parents should have the right to have babies the way that they want. If genetic selection could prevent fatal inherited illnesses from diseases, like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease, we should definitely prevent them, as this would reduce suffering and increase human health. It’s using technology to alleviate pain.
However, if everyone’s “ideal baby,” it can exacerbate existing social inequalities and pave a path to future discrimination. Only the wealthiest would be able to afford genetic selection of offspring. It could also lead to a devaluation of individuals who have been “naturally” born.
We should also value qualities like intellect, skills, and diligence as they have more importance to personality.
Children could be disappointed by the mismatch between the genetic profile that had been designed and their own development.
Personally I would say no, but that would be for medical reasons only, not to design children for intelligence and looks. Each child should have the right to be accepted the way they are, irrespective of whether they match the ideals that had been set out for them by there parents. I believe there is value in every human’s imperfections and so to try and create the ‘perfect child’ is the wrong direction.
Allowing designers babies to be conceived opens the door to future use, where our traits are purchased, not inherited, for greater influence in society.
This could open up issues in our legal systems by using our genetic make-up for social status, where our doctors help to divide society further by ‘engaging’ genetics to make some ‘better’ than others than to fix what has been corrupted and bring all patients up to the ‘norm.’
