Free Speech: With Responsibilities

Image Source: Meta AI Free speech is one of our most essential democratic rights. Through speech, art, literature, and more, we are afforded the opportunity to voice thoughts and feelings, share ideas, question structures, and develop a society. Historical artists across mediums such as paint, mural, literature, and music have utilized these forms of expression as an outlet for change, cultural expression, and to question injustice.

Public art reflects what its audiences feels in both direct and indirect means as a form of protest or protest in it.

Freedom of speech, however, isn’t a permission to say and post whatever you like without a repercussion.

Art on public walls (murals or paintings) are open to view by everyone no matter their belief, age, origin or religion. If artists chose to hang a public mural on the walls of public spaces, they can’t expect every single person to respond positively. A mural that prompts violence, is overtly racist/homophobic etc.

Should have legal grounds to be censored.

This shouldn’t and isn’t an assault on artistic freedom, it’s the protection of innocent people, nor does that mean that a painting that asks our citizens to rethink how our world order works and critiques of a government is up to them to censor as history is often changed based on unpopular ideas and stances as they were previously viewed historically. Freedom of thought and expression also includes having the personal freedom for you as the artist for people to disagree and argue with your piece; and as the viewing audience for you to ignore or dismiss a work of art for your personal belief that doesn’t directly harm an other. And for the artist to stand and debate the viewing audience regarding their work - if nothing else, healthy societies, don’t learn from silencing people.

In my eyes the best option is free expression with the allowance for reasonable limitations on what should be spoken in the public space. It could also extend to limits that would discourage hatred speech/advocation ofviolenceand direct harm. One could always encourage expression but the argument that one can’t be responsible with one’s voice at the public’s cost seems a tad absurd to me.

Artists also shouldn’t be scared off by any dissenting thought; public freedom of speech includes listening to that dissent as well without demanding outright censorship every time our personal beliefs are questioned or challenged.

To encourage and protect freedom with a firm belief that all can voice opinions and that we are all adults who must face challenges or accept diversity or even the fact that one disagrees will better society than the opposite of the former.
