An auction was used by many showrunners when there's some kind of high-stakes hunt for a McGuffin going on. miHoYo themselves have also used it before in Zenless Zone Zero, one of the best stories they've told too. This time it was used as part 1 of a sting operation though we play it out from the other side.

It's definitely still simplified but it was just a small event so it's fine. The bad guy was a little dumb but the story itself was meant to show off Yelan and it did just that. Looking forward to seeing how all of the moving parts will congregate in Nod-Krai since it seems everybody's going there all of a sudden.
