Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. It is estimated that every 60-80 dementia people out of 100 with dementia have Alzheimer's, a chronic progressive neurological condition! We all know what dementia is! However, let us remind ourselves again.

Dementia is a general term that describes a group of symptoms relating to declining mental abilities, which can impact memory, communication, and thinking skills. It is not a normal part of aging.

The exact cause of Alzheimer's is still unknown. However, the researchers have found a genetic link to this condition. If the person has a specific gene variation, called APOE4, he/she is at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's in the later part of their life! It is also estimated that about 15-25 people out of 100 in the general population carry these gene variations! In Alzheimer's, some part of the brain becomes atrophied!

A new investigational drug for Alzheimer's is in phase three of clinical trial! It is showing promising results in the people of this group (with gene variation) who are at higher risk of Alzheimer's, and already suffering from minimal cognitive impairment (MCI). The drug, called valiltramiprosate, slowed brain atrophy in those participants!

On Sunday, the workday for me, I had a busy time at my work. I had to consult 46 patients in my chamber. As usual, most of the patients came with seasonal flu symptoms. I got a few cases where two or more family members came with similar problems. In the visa medical center, I examined some people who came for fitness tests.

I couldn't walk on the treadmill on Sunday. However, I was able to make 10,139 steps. The walk between my home, clinic, and the mosque helped me in this regard!
